What? Go to heaven and spend the rest of eternity singing praises to that genocidal maniac with catastrophic anger management issues known as God? No thank you!

Except Americans in Red States apparently.

However yes I've always argued that if folks really believe in heaven then they should just die ASAP. Religious people will then say "oh but suicide is forbidden". Too which I say - so why didn't that make it into the ten commandments or Bible as forbidden? Muslims get a pass, apparently it is forbidden in the Quoran.

In the Gospel according to Thomas, that was discovered near the Dead Sea in1945, Jesus said that the Kingdom of God is spread upon the earth, but men do not see it.

So, I think we can think of "heaven" as being the time spent enjoying what you love here on earth, whether alone or with others, following your "bliss" as they say, maybe doing something positive, creating joy, being an "angel" in caring for those you love, and reaping the rewards of that wonderful sense of well being.

Yes . Years ago I was deeply influenced by H.G. Wells, who held that the original teaching of Jesus was intended a an eathly political one, one of fairness and earthly justice for all, for which the 'Kiingdom of Heaven' was only a metaphore, couched in peudo-religious terms, because that was the only language an illiterate carpenter had, with which to talk about big ideas. It was only later that people, who Wells called, 'lesser but better educated men', started to take the heaven part literaly, in part because creating a heavenly kingdom, in the sky, was easier and cheaper for the rich and powerful than creating heaven on earth.

@Fernapple Yep, Heaven is a metaphor, like God is a metaphor. Both ideas are meant to convey something larger than words can describe.

Some say "god" is within us. I'm not crazy about the term "god" and prefer "source of creation" or similar, but "god" is the language we have inherited for that purpose.

Likewise, "heaven" isn't a tangible place we "go to" but describes the happiness we can create for ourselves and/or others.

We know things that make us feel good, which we can describe as heavenly, and the circumstances which make us feel bad, which we describe as going through hell. These are just metaphors to describe what is indescribable.

@Julie808 Not for everyone perhaps though.

No and no. Be glad when the time comes, that life is finite is a blessing. It puts an end to suffering for those who suffer, and gives purpose, drive and relief from satiation for the lucky few who find a life of joy and fulfillment, immortality would be a curse.
