One of the myriad evils brought to us by religion is the concept that "We" in religion A, are better than "Them" in religion B. This can be seen in the Islamophobia of the evangelical "Christians" today. As you point out, there are good people in religion who find community and comfort in their beliefs. Unfortunately, by giving power to the religious leaders, who accentuate differences for their own gain, these otherwise good people increase the hatred and conflict in a world already rife with such. This cannot be allowed to continue. Religion, even as practiced by "good people," is a divisive tool used by powerful people to increase the conflicts from which they gain power and wealth.

Charity is an interesting subject. Right now in Utah, I'm seeing advertising attempting to convince people to not give to panhandlers, but instead to give to the organized charities. The excuse is that giving directly to the panhandler is actually supporting illegal drug use. Of course, what is not stated is that the "charities" doing the advertising are some of the least effective groups to give to - spending significantly less on charity than on their own salaries.

As for what I do, I feel it necessary to prioritize my activities. I see the health of the planet as a whole to be far more important than any individual. Without the ability of the earth to supply food, water and air, there is no possibility for any of us to survive. I choose to give my time and treasure (such as it is) to that cause.
