Researchers identify unique cases in which people inherited mitochondrial DNA not just from their mother but also from their father.

Yep! I'll drink to that.
All we pathetic males can give to our descendants are X and Y characteristics of the cell nucleus. Mothers supply the essential bricks and mortar, including mitochondrial DNA.
So here's to mothers and their daughters everywhere.
P.S. Good to see you back.

Why, thank you. It's good to be back. 🤗

And you only borrowed the X bit from grandmom, anyway.

@Fernapple My grandmom was 2 inches over 6 ft tall. My mum was 4ft 10 inches. I'm only 5ft 8inches. That was a damned 'ornery X she passed on!

The research, published in PNAS, showed conclusively that, in three unrelated families, mitochondria from the father's sperm had been passed to the children over several generations.Nov 28, 2018

Study shows mitochondrial DNA can be passed through fathers – what does this ...

[theconversation.com]

@Word @amzungu2 A very interesting article. So fathers can sometimes contribute mitochondria..

@Word interesting study findings to be sure, but even the study authors note their findings are not a challenge to the current understanding that mitochondrial DNA is only inherited maternally, but more a finding of a defect in the process of clearing out the paternal DNA among those who have been found to inherit it. So, yes, men can pass on mitochondrial DNA, but only if they're defective (insert sarcasm here). 😜

@Amzungu2 I wondered what your reason was!! 🤣🤣

Mitochondria, you would not get far without them. ( Hope I spilled that right.)

No, you would not.
Is it rude of me to say you spelled mitochondria right but typo'ed the word 'spelled'? Just seems you would care to know. 😅

@Amzungu2 Thank you. No but it may be rude of me to say, that I typo'ed the word 'spelled' deliberately, pitty Americans don't do irony.

@Fernapple Haha, I actually considered that (and am certainly one American who can appreciate irony) but don't know you well enough to know where it lied. So, I erred on the side of rudeness. How very American of me.

@Fernapple I caught that right-quick -- and in the words of Groucho -- "I resemble that remark ! " 😮 😛

I don't know if it would notify you of my comment above your(this post) but thought you might find it interesting. So, look up it looks like this part

@Word Yes I saw an article about that too, though I think that it is thought to be rare. Can't remember where I saw it now.
