Nature: Bumblebees' 'clever trick' fools plants into flowering
Yes, that made the news here, pretty cool eh?
Bees are awesome. They have a pretty awesome code too.
They walk up the outside of the hive then back down to do it again. In a sideways 8 shape. While the walk upwards they zig zag and shake their thorax. It's a code to tell other bees where to find flowers.
If they go straight up it means fly towards the sun.
Fun fact, insects use the sun for direction and flying straight. That's why they spiral around lights. If you want to go east, the sun will be on you left and go straight. You'll go east. For insects, the lights confuse them and they think it's the sun. They evolved in a world without artificial lights. They keep it to their left and go straight so they think they're going east. Really they're going in a circle because the light is close, not far like the sun.
Back to bees, if they walk up at an angle it means fly that way relative to the sun.
The zig zag represents how far to fly. The more they zig zag the further they fly.
The shaking represents how many flowers there are. More vigorous shaking, more flowers.
Pretty awesome code they came up with
Please do everything you can to help bees! There's so much about them that we don't yet know...but what we do know is...we need them!
