So...what does one who wishes to live in peace and harmony ever care to debate about?
That would be too much mass debating. leave that to the lawyers
I agree that debate isn't the same as a calm, conversational exchange of information. I don't like it.
I often question and wonder aloud about topics of interest. It brings about discussion without poking the other person's defense mechanisms.
Why a debate why not encourage discourse, examination, exchange of ideas and solutions. There is so much that can be changed and discussed about . I find debate clinical and an exrcise in being Clarence Darro wor a young firebrand the Notorius RBG (Ruth Bader Ginsberg) . I was more into to debate when younger and challenged everything now I'm older more confident and love to research a topic that discussion and discourse is my favored for of communitcation.
Anything. Debates are not arguments (as in, "fight" ). No strife need apply.
Debates are about trying to construct the strongest argument (as in "case", like in court), and dismantling your interlocutor's argument. It's a contest of logic; emotions can be persuasive when making arguments but they must be handled very delicately because they are slippery and volatile and can easily get out of hand. I'd say keep the emotion to a minimum if you want to "debate."
I would think people interested in peace would like nothing more than to have thoughtful, reasoned debates on such subjects as the causes of inequality, social and environmental justice, etc.--as part of a productive effort toward advancing understanding and peace in the world.
The only kind I could come up with isn't much a debate at all. But more of a sharing of perspective. Swapping what it is to be real with another being is all we really have. (That's the premise of every debate, if I'm not mistaken. One side [perspective] versus another side [perspcetive])
Anything that is counter to peace and harmony?
Yeah, that's what I meant.
