How do you measure soul? Is there a device that tells you what has a soul? Why are humans the only creatures that have a soul? It sounds grandiose and ridiculous. Tell me what is a soul? Then how can you say everything doesn't have one? I mean... If we are the only creatures that have a soul, we sure as hell don't appreciate it. We are not only, it is said, the only creatures to have a soul, but the only creature destroying and entire planet and annihilating entire species. I believe everything has a soul. A soul is what it means to exist.
I think first you need to define what a "soul" actually means to you. Your definition of "soul" might be different from mine or someone else's. I define a person's soul as the collection of their thoughts, memories, experiences, emotions, intelligence, creativity, and all the other qualities and aspects that make a person who they are. But to me, a soul vanishes when you die as does everything that made a person who they are. Nothing left behind but flesh and bone.
Interesting point of view
You're premise is flawed. You'd have to began by proving that souls exist. You can't assume it exists by default.
To be honest, your last sentence doesn't even make sense. A soul is a religious concept created to explain how people can still live forever after our body dies. It's pretty nonsensical when you really think about it.
Exactly what I was gonna say the sound was just made up to sell you something after you are dead
@SimonMorgan1 how do you sell something to someone that's dead, unless your a necromancer then I need their number
@Wyldxflower they sell you something now when your alive that you can only get when you are dead ...that better?
@SimonMorgan1 that's a great marketing strategy.
If humans have a soul, it would be a process of our evolution ... correct? I mean, we're not implying that a human soul is a 'miracle' or 'divine spark' or 'immortal' or anything like that, are we? So, if humans have a soul, are we the only species so endowed? When, in the chain of evolution, did the first soul appear? Were souls present in earlier homonids, but less evolved? Did Lucy, who lived some 3 million years ago, have a 'crude' version of what we call a soul?
And where does this soul physically exist? How is it measured, and of what does it consist? Clearly I am not a believer in a soul, but remain open to evidence of such, if it could be presented.
I can't prove it to me true or false. But I am empathetic, it the way where I can see and feel someone's soul. I can't prove it with data on a electronic device, but it is proven to me with experience
Also ,good questions what are your answers?
@Wyldxflower Please excuse me, but I am having difficulty understanding your response. If I understand you correctly, you are saying that because you are empathetic (as nearly all of us are) you can “see and feel” the presence of a soul? Whether or not you can demonstrate this on any electronic device is beside the question. What matters are the observables: empirical observations that support your supposition. What is your evidence?
We must always remember this important fact: personal experience is not universal; in fact, one person’s experience is only that and nothing more, one single individual’s experience.
Further, you want to know what my answers are. Would it surprise you that I claim no authority on the subject of souls? The point here is not to provide a new theory on the properties of the soul, but rather to expose the weaknesses in the evidence for such.
You might as well ask how we can measure love.
I think that the soul, free will and a myrad of other human traits are socially constructed by us and they depend on the context where we are thrown and nurtured. The soul is measured by the values given to it by societies where we find ourself.
Still no scientist has created life in a test tube...it is not from a lack of trying
Animals have social groups, personality traits, mating rituals, etc as well. How can we say humans are the only one with souls? If so, we do not respect the fact that we are the only ones to have one. We destroy the earth, consume to devastation and try to figure ways to create synthetic things we've destroyed or recreate it in some way. No appreciation. The birds appreciate the sky. For the wind allows them to fly
@Wyldxflower “The song of birds is found beautiful by everyone; no feeling person in whom something of the European tradition survives fails to be moved by the sound of a robin after a rain shower. Yet something frightening lurks in the song of birds precisely because it is not a song but obeys the spell in which it is enmeshed. The fright appears as well in the threat of migratory flocks, which bespeak ancient divinations, forever presaging ill fortune. With regard to its content, the ambiguity of natural beauty has its origin in mythical ambiguity…” Theodore Adorno (AT, p.66)
The spirit of the bird is instinctive, the frightening part (I think) is that its song can touch our spirit, that it brings out feelings of that don't properly belong to it, and it is perhaps why we take their behavior as 'divinations'.
The 21 grams experiment refers to a scientific study published in 1907 by Duncan MacDougall, a physician from Haverhill, Massachusetts. MacDougall hypothesized that souls have physical weight, and attempted to measure the mass lost by a human when the soul departed the body. .........THEY PROBABLY JUST FARTED.
Souls and spirits are whatever people claim them to be, nothing more nor less. Some consider both to be the same, others claim they're different. But they are concepts, not reality.
Animals have varying levels of sentience / self-awareness according to their particular abilities. There's no reason to add woo to the equation.
A triangle is a concept, a virtual ideal. Do you think a triangle is a form of objective virtual reality, one that we construct out of our experiences? Say compared to St. George's dragon which we also construct out of our experience. Where is the difference, maybe in the rigor of the definition of a triangle compared to that of a dragon. Or is there something beyond, that, maybe a dragon is an impossible creature? But a triangle found in nature is also never perfect, it is a semblance.
@cava Abstractions can be useful representatives of composite aspects of reality, or they can be entirely fanciful. Triangles and other polygons are useful abstractions that help us understand reality. Souls and spirits are fanciful constructs with no clear definition and no antecedents in experienced reality. Their appeal lies in the fact that they conform to our wishes / hopes / desires for immortality.
@cava that was beautiful
