The truth is that the rich in this country have manipulated the laws for their bennefit. If you and your rich buddies own 50,000 apartments and own 500 fast food resturants - then you need people. With excess people your apartments are rented and prices go up. Your fast food places have employees, wages stay down. The rich donate to politicians that will fight against border security so there will be an excess of people - hence high rent, low wages, and homeless people.

I somehow don't buy this narrative of jobs going to migrants, actually many immigrants established businesses.

@gater There are many jobs that go unfilled because there is a shortage of qualified applicants.

We have never had border security. Hence many jobs are lost to illegal aliens. This also drives up the prices of rent - supply and demand.

Most illegal aliens/undocumented persons pick up unskilled, low-paying work that many Americans refuse to do...case in point, crops rotting in the fields in CA because the illegal population is afraid of deportation so don't go to work. They can't get anyone else to work it, even though they raised the pay. The work is too hard for many to tolerate.

@SheThatB They take many jobs away from Americans that would do the work. They drive up the prices of apartments. Its simple economics.

@gater We all have our perceptions and opinions.. [nytimes.com]
