How do you feel about people who just want to put people down, whether it's in opinions or discussions? I have seen an increase in the number of people who are insulting our fellow users.

I have had a number of people say very inappropriate things to me, or I have read them on other posts. And a few people who have talked to me about how they are feeling under attack here.

I feel that the number of people who are abusive or outright rude has increased as the site has grown, and I am becoming less interested in discussions. I feel connected to the idea of this site so would like it to succeed. There are good people here, but some of us are feeling like we are getting drowned out.

What do you think we can do as a group to make this site better?

For some reason, this was the week where all that hit me. Two blocks (they were being unfairly rude to a friend) and one accusation toward me that came out of nowhere.
That said ... I dunno. Everyone has some jerkiness, I think. I think I will either ignore or defend myself with "attacks" on me and then defend and block when it comes to friends.

It's not only new people doing it. Birdingnut tried to tell someone to basically "sit down and shut up" because in her opinion they are aberrant. I called her out on it. Her nonsense is usually pretty harmless but she's getting nastier with it lately.

I think it was birdingbut to whom I was referring in my response

Every person has its own opinion, maybe right for them but not for ourselves. In this situation i just laugh and move on and never let it bother me Akfishlady- don't worry laugh and move on enjoy what you are doing and not others. Hope this helps

There’s a difference between having your own opinion and just plain being mean. There’s a guy on here, I think his name is Jorj and he will just viscously attack you if you don’t think the same way as you. He’s a racist, sexist, gun toting troll.

@Donotbelieve same. I think he was my second block too.

@Donotbelieve I made the mistake of engaging him in what I thought would be a discussion. Thankfully I saw in a different post someone call him out as a troll. Realized then it wasn’t just me being sensitive.

@Akfishlady you can try but he’s completely oblivious and refuses to hear any view but his own. Let us know if you do and what he says.

@Akfishlady before I blocked him he made a couple comments on different threads basically say that things are skewed to be easier and better for women than men. ? Poor oppressed white men have things so difficult.

@Donotbelieve me too

@Marcie1974 Like they say let old dog bark don't fuel them, they eventually run out of energy haha

I haven't noticed this, but maybe that's because I stay out of the religious stuff, including seeing less of those kinds of posts on the main page.

One thing that does concern me is the lack of specific examples whenever someone posts something about abusive members (including @Admin). At this point, it's starting to feel like crying wolf.

I voted for the first three options, in that order. One and four are essentially the same and five might work, but doesn't solve anything for the general population, including new members that might decide not to return because some asshole was rude.

Or longtime members fading away.

Iiieeeee would be careful regarding any action further than calling them out unless they're slinging threats, but that's just my brainwave.

@ScienceBiker well, flagging, I guess. It reports to moderators.

i cannot vote because i view this case by case. i have been here maybe a week, maybe less, and i have only been attacked personally once. oh, some folks have gotten pretty close to blurring the line between disagreeing strongly with what i said and blasting me personally for saying it, but only one, so far, has called me a piece of crap -- not for who i am, which that person doesn't know, or for what i said, since that person probably didn't process what i said, but simply because i disagreed with his assertion that liberals are disgusting; he would call any liberal that, without knowing them; all they would have to say would be "i am a liberal" for him to call them pieces of crap. i have not blocked him. if he should happen to respond to my last response, which was to call him out for calling names instead of arguing logically, i might have to block him. i did report him. this isn't facebook. as far as i can tell, there is a rule against attacking each other personally.

g

@Akfishlady i always respond at least once for a few reasons. 1. sometimes they sound convincing to the undecided and i want to bust them publicly. it's not for the purpose of changing them; they can't be changed. it's for the lurkers. expose trolls! 2. it is an opportunity to express my thoughts on the topic without starting my own post, since i probably wouldn't start a post just to start an argument lol. having done that, then i would feel free to block.

while i do feel strongly that everybody should be aloud 2 state their opinion, im all about being respectful. also if a group is in support of something you are against and you join just 2 call people names and generally be unpleasant, you are a troll, in that case, yes, i may call them out, while remaining respectful. but at some point yes, with people who want 2 just be rude, eventually blocking them is going 2 end up being the end result

There are one or two I would have liked to block , and while I can do that on Facebook , I haven't found a means to do that here .

@Cast1es have u tried talking with admin? if a person is being hurtful or pushing their beliefs, they do not belong on this site. maybe admin could help

Well, just like any place online, we have a variety of people with different views. I happen to be a person who can be very goofy, but also very robotic when I'm trying to explain myself, which may not come across as 'nice'. I personally do not like when people hold up feelings over facts, and when people try to use their opinion as fact with nothing to back that up, and I will point that out. However, I try to make sure that I'm not attacking another person here with what I'm saying. If someone can't handle a debate that is based on the subject, I don't think that's my problem.

If one can't play nice, they can't play. There's no need to abuse others, ever.

@Akfishlady I can tell you that I'm not really the type to demand evidence, I'm more the type to show evidence and use it to explain why I've come to the conclusion I have. I don't really like it when people are all like, "prove it", so I don't do it to other people.

Tyranny by the masses

I deal with this on a day to day basis and not just online... I noticed this phenomena way back 20 years ago. It seemed like the "generation next" generation had such a dismal outlook on life. I think it was due in part to the expanding meth epidemic that was pretty much nationwide at that point, I wanna say 1999 was when it got so abhorrent. I felt ashamed of myself because I didn't have tons and tons of friends giving me all the attention that everyone so desired. You could not go out and really enjoy yourself at the disco/dance bar because everyone would just "BITE YA" it seemed, atleast to me.... I noticed this the most when I turned 21 years old and started receiving the full exposure to the night life. I thought that maybe I was just a bit naive and was just experiencing life in a different light. But it carried on well into my later adult years and now I suffer from ptsd/anxiety/depression because of the dismal life era.

I'm sure that 9/11 would not have helped either.
