Am I alone in having issues with understanding lyrics?

I have always had troble understanding lyrics. I never liked Rap at all... but then, I never understood any of it, so I could only judge songs by their repetitious beats. I now have hearing issues, but this has been my problem since day one. Is there some kind of cognitive problem I might have; an issue with translating sung lyrics?

you can usually get the words so maybe a good idea to look at the lyrics forst so you knwo what the song is about - I know many peopel who miss words in songs or get htem wrong because its now always a clear recording (my Friend was singing 'Bollocking Tyre' instead of Mull of Kintyre.

When I am so motivated I google the lyrics because I also have trouble understanding. And for fun there are several websites of misunderstood lyrics.

I've had difficulty with some song lyrics before...most notably with the Eddie Money classic Shakin', the lyrics I misunderstood were "and did some shakin' til the middle of the night" and I thought I heard something slightly different there...

Why do you think Wierd Al was so popular?
I can't understand half of them. And nowadays the lyrics are so stupid, why would you want to! Rap and country both...ugh...and most pop songs...

I wear hearing aids because of pretty severe hearing loss. Lyrics are almost impossible for me. I used to love music but listen to little anymore because of the loss. My aids are supposedly tuned to my hearing but. . . If interested you might check here: [healthyhearing.com]

In my opinion lyrics are not meant to be listened to in modern pop/rock music. The songs are constructed so that lyrics, such as they are, blend into a kind of computer-techno sound and word blended noise that sort of surrounds listeners but doesn't pentrate them in any meaningful way. At some point in the past pop, rock and techno Muzak combined to make this kind of modern corporate 'surround me but don't penetrate me' music. It fits the modern Age and corporate culture of seducing, distracting and anaesthetising people while ruling over them in every more subtle ways. The age of singers, songwriters, artists, performers with something to say, such as the music I grew up with, has largely disappeared, a few niche exceptions aside. Music always reflects the Age in which it is produced. So, there's little point trying to understand the lyrics now; they've got nothing to say.

I had that trouble as well, but it's not as bad now; I have hearing aids.

I have always had trouble understanding lyrics too, at least compared to some of my family members who seem to be able to catch every word. In my experience, understanding can improve with practice and with getting to know the singer’s specific accent and way of pronouncing words, as well as his or her lyrical choices.

Nope. Misunderstanding lyrics is so common there's a word for it:. mondegreens. From the mishearing of 'They slew the Earl of Moray/and laid him on the green' to 'They slew the Earl of Moray/and Lady Mondegreen.'

I was relieved to hear this was a thing when I learnt about it instead of my quarter-deaf ass forever getting things wrong.

You can type in the title of a song, or any part of the song you remember, with "lyrics," and several lyric links will come up.

Then add the word "meaning" to your song title and lyrics search and you'll get several links where the lyrics are broken down and explained.

Naaaa! I don’t always hear them correctly. Many people do. Hendrix “ .... excuse me while I kiss this guy” it happens. I look up lyrics and I’m amazed at what I didn’t hear correctly.
