Elon Musk Worries That AI Research Will Create an 'Immortal Dictator'...
[livescience.com]
Weird. That's exactly what I'm hoping it WILL create. Humans are too stupid to rule themselves. Benevolent AI dictatorship, ftw!
Funny how the article begins by asking us to imagine the worst kind of ruler. Why not the best? Or maybe skip the extremes even and propose a middle ground with a program that makes mistakes, but actually learns from them... for thousands of years. Doesn't sound so bad, if you ask me.
People seem to forget "garbage in, garbage out" also applies in reverse. An AI dictator would only be exactly as we made it to be. Code in fundamental principles that prevent it from despotism or psychopathy and that sounds like a perfect dictator to have running things. Doesn't it?
No! I am human, & wish to remain so & hopefully have us as a race finally get our shit together. If we have machines aid us on that journey, fine, we already have for ages, but as a 'ruler', may as well have a religion & a god. I'll pass, thanks.

Bit of a non sequitur from a program written by humans to take care of the mundane banalities of governing to religion and a god, don't you think?
Imagine how much farther we'd get with a superintelligence at the wheel making sure everyone is comfortable and happy, and that we have the time and resources to work on further advancements in science, art, ethics... everything and anything!
Don't let dystopian sci-fi ruin this for you. Heh.
@Torq Again "a superintelligence at the wheel" sounds a lot like a god figure to me. As I said, I'll pass, if I'm able. It would be dystopian & it would be a ruin. & assuming that we would be left with time to do "everything & anything", what sci-fi have you been reading?
@phxbillcee
Well, fiction tends towards worst case scenarios like genocidal rulers with absolute power. No drama in things ticking along perfectly. Sci-fi is no different. Which is why we have this image of the supercomputer going horribly awry rather than just doing a perfect job like WE programmed it to.
There's a world of difference between a superintelligence that WE design, code, and create and a capricious, apparently homicidal god thought up by charlatans with the intent to "code" us.
I'm not saying we necessarily have the technologic capabilities to do it just yet, but we're close. Automate government. It's the next step to human progress.
