Crime rates by country, I was surprised at both Sweden and France have high crime rates.
I also wonder if it is partially because things that are illegal in sweden such as street harassment and online harassment are illegal and included in data, whereas such things are not even illegal or recorded in US data.
I mean how many of us have experienced this and not reported it? Because it is not illegal yet in our respective nations, USA and Canada. "When a person on the internet contacts you in some way, via messages, direct messages, comments on your pictures, etc., and alludes to the body, sex, nudity, gives unwelcome compliments or invitations—it is sexual harassment.
This behavior can be a crime, it depends on the situation. It is always worth reporting the person to the administrators of the page, and to the police for help in figuring out if it is a crime. You can also use our example guide, but it does not cover everything. Check in with the police if you are uncertain."
I think this comes down to how they tabulate their crime rates. For example, few years ago I learned that Sweden counts every individual rape as a separate crime. So that if you have one man or woman rape another person MULTIPLE times, each rape is counted as a separate crime. I do not think crime is tabulated that way in USA/Canada. With such a system in place, it makes sense why crime data would be higher as one victim repeatedly victimized by one perp is documented repeatedly in the crimes data.
"the way in which sexual crimes are reported in Sweden, where all reported events are recorded as crimes and several offences of the same type are recorded separately. In other words, if someone reports being raped by the same perpetrator five times, in Sweden that would be recorded as five potential crimes rather than one."
And of course the 'land of the free' is right up there at the top.
Very interesting! Some of the country positions were quite surprising. Though if they include crimes like pickpocket and extortion the same as rape and murder, it kind of throws numbers off. I would like to see the same list but just counting violent crime. I think it would dramatically alter the list.
Love that Portugal is right down there, after decriminalisation of many drugs that people were previously incarcerated for having. So much information on this.
