One of the biggest things that annoys me about Xtians is their dogged thankfulness to god. I lived in Cali for 40 years and still have good friends there. They have been posting pictures of the fires and smoke. My sister also shared a picture of a scene that her friend in Cali posted and my semi-literate cousin wrote, "Thank you Lord thank you Lord and thanks to all the people that did the rescue."
She should be giving thanks to the rescuers alone. If there is a god and he lets this happen without having the grace to even send rain, then he ain't much of a "fatherly" god. In fact, it looks as if he hates nature and humans.

I recall the time when we invaded Iraq after 9/11. The administration reassured us we would be welcomed as liberators. Instead, Iraqis thanked and praised Allah for delivering them from Saddam Hussien. Our soldiers got none of the crecit, and apparently plenty of the blame for what followed. I didn't support our going into Iraq, but the example of people selectively finding reasons to thank and praise their deity is probably more common than not - even though it really doesn't make any sense.

When people thank a sky fairy for helping them to be safe I always ask so the other people deserved to die? All of those animals deserved to die? The firefighters who were injured or died deserved it? If the sky fairy exists it is like the Fae in a Jim Butcher's Dresden series, capricious and not concerned with anything but their goals. They may save you but there is a huge cost. Also how does this happen if they're all powerful sky fairy is in fact all powerful. I have found they don't like it when you call it vicious and capricious and that you will never respect a sky fairy like that.

This is the sort of thing that proves to be faithful, it helps to be stupid. Then one doesn't question the obvious logical disconnects that a thoughtful person would question. Just thank God and don't think about it.

Yes, it is truly one of the scariest episodes. It makes you wonder about being around a being with super powers that can read your thoughts. It occurs to me; that is just what religion wonders about. I wonder if that was intentional.
Whenever I hear someone thanking god for sparing them from some general disaster , what I hear is :
"thanks for killing those others, instead of me !"

Well of course, as any good Christian / Muslim /Jew / Scientologist etc. knows, God creates those awful disasters just to test your faith. And then it waits for you to thank it profusely and give money. Then, it tests you again. And again. And you probably deserve it because you're such a poor unfortunate brainwashed schmuck that you can't think for yourself. To unwind your brain and get healed from your religiosity, see your local Zen monk or other qualified atheist counselor.

@Gwendolyn2018 Exactly the reason for sacrifices. If you slaughter a bull in front of your house, the lord will smile upon you. You may still get the covid and die, but the gods will be smiling. (That must be true because it's in the bibble.)
And, they never think to ask why a god who knows everything, every thought, would ever need to "test" a person's faith. Given it already knows the level of a person's faith, and whether the person will pass or fail, the tests are just sick games it likes to play. Only a cruel god would do such a thing.

@Gwendolyn2018 I’m terribly sorry about the misspelling. Exactly the same with my uncle’s grave—my mother paid to have her brother’s name corrected on his tombstone. Small world.
@Gwendolyn2018 it is funny, and sad at the same time. My mother was very upset, and still laments how anyone could get something so important (at least to her) wrong. As you said, set in stone. Luckily, the correction is only noticeable to the keen eye. They did a good repair.
They can't let go of the notion that it is their behavior that has won them favor in the eyes of their god, and it is the behavior of others that has doomed them. It isn't Christianity at all!
