I wasn't sure what category to post this in, so I am putting it here. High school graduations are around the corner and as a college professor, I am making a suggestion (really, it's more of a plea than anything else), especially for students who are going away to college: give them some kind of "home office" kit: a stapler, staples to FILL said stapler, tape, scissors, a couple of highlighters, paper clips, etc. Maybe I am showing my age by suggesting this stuff, but it is expensive to buy when you're getting it at the campus bookstore. Maybe some stamps if you are hoping that they will mail you overpriced post cards once they arrive on campus. Band-,AIDS and some antibiotic ointment. Aspirin or some other pain reliever. There are probably many gift sets that include all this stuff, but you could also buy a plastic shoe box and fill it with these items. Buy one or two at a time, and before you know it, you've got a practical gift that may make your child/niece/nephew the go-to person on their floor, because no one else remembered to bring this type of stuff.
And their professors will be happy because they can actually STAPLE pages together rather than turning in papers where a corner is folded over and over because they DIDN'T have a stapler.
Thanks. I feel better now.
