Want to draw attention to the plight of children, parents, teachers, and schools, pan-India. I know that nobody on this platform can (or should) do anything about this...it will work out somehow, but just wanted to share anyways...

I'm confused. This article makes reference to Delhi's public schools, but the goes on to talk about tuition and fees. In the States, public schools do not charge these fees, but private schools (and colleges, both public and private,) do. So, what am I missing? Is there no truly public option?

I've not been to India, but have family and friends from there. I've done a bit of volunteer work in Kenya, and the systems seem similar as far as education goes. Even the very worst schools in the states look like high tech academies in comparison with the best free public schools in places like Sub Saharan Africa and India. The environmental conditions are unbelievable and resources and teachers nearly non existent. To get anything better, there are significant fees. It's a big barrier to education in many places.

I think they use the English term Public School, which means one open to anyone who can pay, as opposed to church or grammar schools, which were once only open to sellected pupils, and state schools which are the free ones payed for by taxes. Public schools in the UK and India are therefore exactly the opposite of its meaning in the states.
