Fair Weather Beggars
Warmer weather has a foot in the door and soon those with cardboard signs asking for 'anything helps' are about to be seen at freeway off-ramps, intersections, and shopping center parking lots. Some are getting creative signs done by pretty good artists.
Many wear designer labels, some are noticably down on their luck and look homeless. I have never helped these people, I donate to organizations that help them, or I assume they're being helped.
What is really happening here? Mental Illness? Boredom? Laziness? A Dare? WHAT????
At times a panhandler is around Smith's in Wendover. I do not give money, but I've taken them into the store to get them some food.
I always note the telltale bend crease in the sign...meaning they have reused the sign many times and fold it to hide it from cops when they drive by. Many times these people have been busted for panhandling when they have a motel room, cars, food and liquor. One such scam artist was recently busted here with an iPhone and a Square reader so he could accept credit cards on the fly...
I drove city bus most of my working life. A lot of these people are scammers. The one guy in particular used to get off work (I think at Alcoa Aluminum) then set up at the mall exit for a couple of hours with a variety of cardboard signs he carried in his backpack. One said he was a homeless veteran, yet on Veterans Day, when anyone with proof of service could ride free, he paid his fare. A couple of the others used to coordinate schedules so they each had a turn. I donate nothing to them.
