Massive marine die-off in Russia could threaten endangered sea otters, other vulnerable species
Now believed to be caused by an unprecedented algae bloom, the decimation of bottom-dwelling sea life may have devastating ripple effects.
It's the heat. The sea ice is at its latest start to freezing in recorded history.
Not good news. We cannot bury bad things in the ocean
This about an algae bloom.
. . . is there evidence of "bury bad things" ?
(note my response to powder below)
That's terrible news...but ''page not found."
WORKED when I posted it, . . . edited, should work now.
@FearlessFly Thanks! This is terrifying....notice the first sentence....
"These microscopic phytoplankton produce as much as half the world’s oxygen, but certain species can grow out of control when nutrients in runoff “overfeed” them or water temperatures increase. When this happens, they emit toxins and deplete oxygen levels in the water as they die and begin decomposing on the seafloor. That could explain high mortality among Kamchatka’s bottom-dwellers, Vinnikov says. (Learn more about algal blooms and red tides here.)"
