I'm surprised the BSA is even still in business.

Let's see how I put this. Every time I see advertising about boys scouts sex abuse. I recall I was a boy scout in my growning years. My scout master was homosexual as I saw it after I left scouts. He never molested me and we all respected him. But when we went camping... He used to dress like a stripper and give us strip shows by campfire. Him and his two or three main assistance. Despite that I had never enjoyed or visit stripper joints. I wonder if the reason I don't care for strip joints is because my first experience with a stripper dance was looking at a man stripping as if was a woman and maybe that is some form of sexual abuse. I would have no doubt I could prove of the scout master doings. And within the troop there was a private troop that will go by themselves to camping without the rest of us, Nothing of what happened with that troop was ever discussed outside of that troop. It was Secret and Private. I was never interested in all that Privacy and the Honor to belong to that Private Troop. I am strickly heterosexual, I MEAN STRICKLY. So I had never considered myself being hurt by my Scouting Experience despite growing and realizing the Scout Master was outside of scouting pretty out there and inside of scouting out there too. Well I thank him for Ruining My Stripper Experience for me. SAVED ME A LOT OF MONEY, FOR SURE.

Religious and community based what could go wrong???

Yep.

I was an altar boy in my church for 3 years and a boy scout for 1.5 years and in neither case was I ever molested , not by the priest nor my scoutmaster and I was alone with them on several occasions.

I must've been a really ugly kid.

@Wisterious Wow.

Lucky You. Ugly Kids got All the Luck!!!!!

I was never a cub scout or boy scout. I felt uncomfortable with their format--too military. And I thought the uniforms look too much like Hitler Youth. I guess my pedophile radar was working even at that young age.

Not to doubt you but what did you knew of Hitler Youth when you were of Cub Scout age? Unless you grew up in Germany of course.

@GipsyOfNewSpain Being Secular Jewish, so I am well read to the rise of Nazi Deutschland. It's all part of our collective knowledge. Don't assume I'm uninformed even at a very early age.

@ADKSparky You got your reason. My Culture Boys will Levitate toward any organization mimicking Military. We Played War Games... I know I did. I Served 20 years in the Military too. And I can not say I ever saw any molestation during my time in the Scouts. Maybe a year? Just Glad I was not Targeted or Marked. But I Understand Now Pedophiles are Everywhere including Scouting and Religions, Churches and Schools.

I thought priest were bad about raping little boys.

I joined in 1969, I was 10, they said I was too old to be a cub scout, and too young to be a boy scout.
I was a WEBELOS!
Exactly how could an organization like that NOT attract pedophiles?

Well...when a religious person.asks 'what is outspoken atheism good for?'

I guess now we can say Prevents your child from getting molested.
.

@Wisterious in this case being an outspoken atheist would have gotten you kicked out of the boy scouts. So in a sense it would likely have prevented you from being molested.

As someone who grew up in scouting and for whom Scouting leaders were people to look up to and were decent people this saddens me and I hope they step up and help the youth that were harmed. I can honestly say that there was no discrimination in our scout troop, I was an out atheist and that was fine when I said a promise I omitted the god part and they were cool with that. Our camps were held in tents that were 6 boys and one leader, as a female that meant I was in a tent with 6 boys aged around 6 to 10yrs old. As a Venturer leader we put up one large tarp and everyone slept under that. I would suggest that the intent of scouting has been perverted by the dogma of cults if they are saying you have to worship our god.

Soooo glad I never got into the boy scout stuff.

I'm tired of seeing and hearing about this. All those poor old traumatized "boys" are going to end up with maybe $250 while the attorneys get rich off this scheme. I'm also resentful that I was not personally traumatized by Girls Scouts but they would not even give me any of their cookies.

sexual abuse in boys is brushed under the carpet far too often, it makes people uncomfortable and the dying stereotypes that men should be strong and internalize things havent helped, girls get empathy and treatment as they should but boys should also get equl amounts of attention, this way they can heal and not grow into men wholl continue the cycle which most often don't but for their overall well being primarily

@Wisterious pretty heart breaking stuff the stats are pretty high and you wouldn't even know it at first glance

@Wisterious girls do, not as much as they should regardless but they have a bit more going on then boys, neither should even to deal with this bs though 😟

If I had sons they wouldn't be scouts. Period. Now once they got to High School I would definitely be for them joining JROTC.

I'm so sorry to see all this take place. YES, allowing perverts to be scout leaders was a big, big mistake. On the other hand, I was an Eagle Scout, and I received training and knowledge that have been guiding influences my whole like. Sure, one of the kids in our troop was queer, but nobody gave a damn because he wasn't a threat to anybody. Of course, we did NOT have any leaders that were "strange." So it was a good experience for me, all in all.
