Big government is not the problem. You can't have a small government governing 330 million people in the most diverse complicated population in the history of the world. It is naive to think so. I don't listen to conservatives and haven't for a long time. They are ill suited to govern in the modern world. Most people don't like or are leery of change, but conservatives fear and hate change. They continually live in the past as the world moves forward and change happens faster and faster. If you can't look and plan for the future you will be left behind. Conservatives hate regulations because regulations curb their ability to make as much money as they want with no regard for the health and welfare of the general population. Our problem is the elected officials in Washington make their own rules and laws pertaining to them. This is what needs to change., that and getting big money (legalized bribery) out of politics.
@dave1459 The highest estimate is almost 20% (6% for the federal government), so you are off by a lot. When the Republicans, other than Trump who is really only a Republican by affiliation, not philosophy; speak of large Government, they are speaking of the regulatory parts of the government. They don't like the FDA, EPA, etc. They hate anything restricting unbridled capitalism. Those departments protecting the people and the land. Of course with automation and less and less manufacturing in this country due to nothing more than greed, someone will need to provide jobs or pay folks to do nothing. What would be your answer to these problems?
