Sitting between two families at kid's soccer game. All they have talked about the entire time is religion.
Mom asked kid what does a rainbow mean and kid starts talking about God's promise to never flood the earth again.
I was good and kept my mouth shut.
I am getting PTSD!
I once read that the story of the rainbow as a promise not to destroy humanity was taken from a much older version where the rainbow was the necklace of Isis. It was also the bridge she used between heaven and earth. Only when one of the lesser male gods got huffy and decided to go berserk and drown everyone for making too much noise did Isis intervene and take back the rainbow. She also told him he would be in big trouble if he ever hurt her beloved children again.
When Genesis was finally written, Isis was written out; the motive for the flood was changed; the rainbow was used as a completely different prop; and a bizarre idea emerged about God's character. He said he drowned everyone because they were evil, and then said he would never do it again because humans are evil from birth. Some improvement on an ancient myth that turned out to be.
That had to be painful. Ouch !
There is that lovely double standard of it being ok to blather about religion - but if you had started asking questions about the ark (“How did Noah’s family divide up the intestinal parasites between them? Who had all the different types of head lice ? &rdquo they would get all pissy and huffy in a hurry.
First and foremost, I share your frustration.
I am not sure if I mentioned this to you or not but since I retired I have had the good fortune to be able to go back to schools and study Philosophy. One of the classes I took was the Philosophy of religion. It explains the argument s for and against the existence of god. One of the problems with god is the “Problem with Evil.” This video explains it. It is well done.
That's a new one...hadn't heard the rainbow equated with the flood...or I heard it so long ago that I forgot about it...how stupid...everybody knows that it's all about the pot of gold...duh...
Teaching your kids to worship as you do is indoctrination and it's WRONG.
how does that work?...so if you had kids and you were an atheist, you should make sure they are mormons?...haha...I'm not meaning this as an attack, but passing on you're family values, whatever they maybe, for good or ill, is mostly expected in any society...in fact, it might be the foundation of 'society'...haha
if you love your kid you wont. what if you're wrong? how would you get past pascal's wager?
You know when something smells bad, you kinda move out if the way. Well.... i would of set there just like you. I understand the DETOX needed after hearing all of that. Geeze, thats awful you had to sit through it.
