Thank You Denny Taylor for this piece..
This forum seems a good place to post a link to it . It’s an interesting ( I say enlightening) read.
Apologies that my first post in this forum is a link and not something of my own creation, I’ll take the time to actually write something here soon.
Waste of time and energy for Harris to berate Chomsky. Ego builder for Harris.
I love Chomsky so much as a thinker and as a human being that I can’t disagree ..
Plus, Sam is just an ass ...
I wouldn't count myself a Sam Harris fan. I find myself disagreeing with him more than I don't.
While I do agree he is an extremely intelligent person, I think much of the time, he comes across (to me, at least) as being so terribly condescending and arrogant, it's hard for me to really listen to him without being influenced by the feelings he elicits in me.
I also think it was foolish of him to engage in this way with Chomsky.
Foolish indeed!
To me he represents all that is abhorant in “atheist intellectualism” .
While I find many atheist intellectuals to be interesting and compelling writers and thinkers there is a tide of narcicism that rolls through this crowd that is incredibly obnoxious and reactionary.
Sam Harris is an ass , I don’t even enjoy his writing when he sticks to his own subject..
Richard Dawkins is a challenge for me, he has written three books that I think are among the more important books of a generation ..
Selfish gene
The extended phenotype
The greatest show on earth
And “ The Magic Of Reality” which is probably the best general science book for young readers I know of...
And yet he continually disgusts me with his reactionary islamophobia and misogyny .
Really, he’s a total ass, his book “the god delusion” was cathartic on the first read, I was younger and had met few Atheists and had deep discussions with none of them so that book felt welcome.
But it started to wear on me by the end, it was repetitive and unduly dismissive of , well, of most of society.
I guess he’s a misanthrope , but in the most unpleasant and condescending way..
I try to seek out atheist and agnostic intellectuals with a bit of Humanity ! And really to me compassion, civic responsibility and a general good will go so hand in hand with and seem an inevitable consequence of Agnosticism or atheism, so it confounds me when I witness what seems to be the opposite.
