I've been watching movies about EVEREST.

I was trying to understand the point, "because its there." Shaking head. Why would you do that to yourself? First off its agony on the body, and mind. Second, you're probably not going to make it to the top or off the mountain.

I just don't get it. Of course there are a lot of things I don't get. Like people who don't wear masks or people who "think" they are wearing one but their nose is exposed. Or not exposed and their mouth is...Dude, it's not a fashion statement. It does have a purpose.

And so much more. Please add your mind boggles in comments.

The magic, the trees, the forest, driving there with friends. Do you do it because it's there?

I am uneasy about a lot of the stunts that Westerners from highly developed countries, go to the (third) underdeveloped world to indulge in. Because they are basically flaunting the fact that they come from cultures wealthy enough to afford health and life insurance, good hospitals and often high quality state health care, plus reasonable levels of social security. So that they do not have to worry about the effects, especially financial, that injury or death may have on them or their families. This is surely insultingly insensitive towards people, for whom, even a couple of days off with a broken leg, could mean great hardship and even real hunger for their families.

While the certainly help to provide money and jobs in the tourist industries, you have to wonder if even more help could not be provided, by responsible tourism, devoted to revering the cultures and natural history of the lands visited.

You have nailed it.

I watched a very interesting movie on an American who was a Porter for one trip to the base of the Mountain. He ate, slept, and did with the others right along beside them. They get paid very minimum per day and rely on the tips if they get any to live on the rest of the year. Their daily rate is only around 13.00 a day which buys food and supplies and breaks them even. The tips are what they live on throughout the year. If they get none, they essentially do it for free. Depending on what they get they either live on it with their families for the year or do 6 months of farming. This information came directly from them in the movie/documentary called "The Porter:Untold Story of Everest."

Going up Everest was once a guy thing, Don't look for logic,

Like riding motorbikes or car racing?
Yet how do you explain childbirth, until recent times a serious hazard to health.
