I just had a WIN, of sorts, for religious non-discrimation at a healthcare facility! I kept noticing when I went to my PT appts that that I was being subjected to a particularly obnoxious Xian sermon via the radio every time I sat in the waiting room. That it was of a hateful type of Xianity is neither here nor there; but this particular morning I found being harangued whilst looking at a BIG poster that proclaimed the institution's non-discrimation practices (religious identification was specifically mentioned) just too galling. I informed the receptionist that I would be waiting outside, due to my lack of desire to be importuned by this sermon, and she could get me when my therapist was free. I mentioned to my therapist what transpired; she agreed it was inappropriate and invited me to talk with the manager. I did so. The manager turned out to be an acquaintance of mine who had no idea that this was being played out for a captive audience. She apologized and said that she would replace the offensive radio station with something more reflective of the endeavours of PT, like relaxing (non-religious) music. The Bible, handed by some group, might have to stay, though. (This IS SW VA.)
There is a chain burger restaurant in our area, with the same owner of all the local franchises. Religious music and programming is played at all of them. And I don't mean in a background kind of way.
It is played so loudly it actually interferes with conversation.
this story makes me happy. i love hearing about situations that got handled in such a mellow way. i try to remind myself, that sometimes when someone does something to offend you, they may not have realized it was offensive. if you politely say, this is offending me, they may get all grumpy, but theres a chance that, like your situation, there was some other explanation besides just people suck. and apon realizing what was wrong, they fixed it. i love it!
