It's sad but we should never have gone in there to stay. A quick strike for what we thought they did and then leave would have worked much better. Many people think the war in Afghanistan between Russia and the Taliban was one of the reasons the Soviet Union crumbled.

I am sorry about what's going to happen in Afghanistan when we leave but I'm quite sure if we stayed another 10 years we would have the same result.

The general impression that I get is that the US Defense Budget is a gross misnomer and is more of an Offense Budget.

Were is the UN in all of this?

The US has never acquired the skill of finesse in global leadership. It thunders in and then it thunders out. Many predicted, me included, that Afghanistan would be Vietnam 2. Last time it was helicopters thrown off ships, now it's Taliban taking US drones. Some say, well, they got Bin Laden. Yes, in Pakistan, a decade later, though he his gang fled soon after the occupation. It seems the US Military is still fighting Nazis, in their minds, but in different countries, but of course they haven't been Nazis since 1945. They are not that kind of enemy. And on it goes. They use 20th Century thinking to fight 21st Century wars, and won't be told, though frig knows experts on the region tried to warn them 20 years ago against invasion in favour of targeted responses to Islamic fascism. No, thunder in and be home for Christmas, another 'mission accomplished'. A tragedy for all who have suffered. Now again it will be said that more 9/11 attacks on America will be planned from Afghanistan, curious since the 9/11/01 attacks were actually planned in Europe, financed by middle east countries. Don't tell the Generals; they're the experts -- on ill conceived post WW2 US Military disasters.

@Druvius indeed you would. Einstein's definition of insanity -- constantly repeating the same mistake or experiment with the same failed result-- certainly applies here. But look at how much of the US budget the military gobbles up, and the geographical areas that benefit, and it's not hard to see what's going on.

Take it off your mind.

The price of joining up with real terrorists against a superpower. We accomplished our mission to kill OBL and disolve the Afghan govt of Taliban (which was desired by Afghanis) so it's time to go. We can't build their nation and shouldn't but they're actually better off now than when we came in. They may not hold that distinction but they've got a chance. The interpreters will be gotten out and beyond that is common war tragedy.

@Druvius Very clever. Guess you put me in my place. Eh? It's also what one calls a person from Afghanistan, however.
