So did Emily Geiger, an ancestor mine in South Carolina. Spies got wind of Cornwallis's plan to ambush the American general in the area. They asked Emily Geiger to ride through British lines to carry word to Morgan. She did, and Morgan avoided the trap, leading Cornwallis on a chase that ended when Cornwallis surrendered, ending the Revolutionary War.

Sidesaddle, really?

It was that eras equivalent to our wearing heels.
Remember Ginger Rogers did everything Fred Astaire did except she didn't backwards and wearing high heels.

@Lorajay Those women suffered major lower back pain then especially after a 40 mile horse ride.
My ass hurt after an hour riding normal, you know like humans do.

@Willow_Wisp up to my 30s I rode horses fairly often. I guess one of the advantages of my generous padding is I don't get sore. I did some riding with my neighbor about 3 years ago after I hadn't been on a horse for maybe 10-15 years. We rode for a couple hours and I never hurt at all.

I always thought that women who had to ride side settle probably had extraordinarily strong legs and excellent balance. I imagine quick right turns could be a catastrophe.

I always thought side saddle would be more difficult.
