That tiny little town on the south coast of Crete, called Ierapetra, was where my husband and I lived for several months in 1972, and again in 1975. In between, we had to return to Chicago to earn enough money to go back there. Those were some of the most memorable times of my life, hanging out on the shores of the Mediterranean by day and the discotheque at night, and meeting tourists from all over the world. All of this before we settled down to the business of becoming responsible homeowners and parents (which provided more of the most memorable times)

Crete is lovely, though I only know the area round Rethimno.

I was never in that corner of the island. Did you ever take one of those terrifying bus rides through the mountains? The bus ride from Heraklion to Ierapetra was a real white knuckler

@TheoryNumber3 I only took one bus ride which was not too dramatic, though very beautiful. Mainly I hiked, but I still got to some pretty dramatic places. Isolated churches in the mountians, Rethimno town centre which still has Islamic style windows, and coastal walks to bays only reachable on foot or by boat.

@Fernapple Your photos are breathtaking!

One day my husband and I took a walk down a road along the Med. Way ahead we could see a bend in the road... and we wanted to see what was beyond it. It seemed like we would never get there. When we did, it was just more road. We hadn't considered the fact that we had to walk back, and we were both exhausted.

We started back towards Ierapetra and eventually sat down on the side of the road to rest for a few minutes. (We were not hikers... just displaced Chicagoans). While we were sitting there a car pulled up and motioned for us to get in and he drove us back to Ierapetra. I got the impression he had rescued a lot of tourists who bit off more than they could chew. The people there were very kind. When we walked around town people would come out of their houses and offer us fresh fruits and vegetables from their gardens.

@TheoryNumber3 Yes they are very kind. I want to go back one day and do the more touristy things like Konosus, which I missed out on the first time.
