There is currently a 7 metre (23 ft) diameter sculpture hanging in the nave of Durham cathedral. It is based on thousands of NASA satellite photos and was made to a scale of 1 centimetre equals 5 kilometres. (1:5,000)
Here's a couple of photos I took of it.
(The cathedral was built some 900 to 1,000 years ago. The first photo shows the massive size of this impressive Norman structure.)
One minor correction: the scale is 1:500,000.
Oops.
@Petter Everybody makes mistakes - specially me!
@anglophone .... but to forget that a centimetre is only a hundredth of a meter!
Stunning conversation piece!
But you do need a large house!
@Petter 'Tis the House of God, my boy!
@anglophone When people visit my house they exclaim "Good God"!!!
@Petter One would need a high ceiling or the scale of it would overwhelm... three levels of wide open space would be enough
@AnonySchmoose Nah. Just take take the roof off our house. It hardly ever rains in Mojacar.
@Petter
A tall open courtyard would be nice
Just use the real moon
@AnonySchmoose Trouble with that is one only sees one half of the moon, and a lot of that is at an angle.
Also, in those circumstances, I get the urge to hold someone.
What is supporting it & what is it made of?
It is supported by some thin, black coated, steel cables and is internally lit. I do not know what material was sculpted.
It was created by Luke Jerram.
I wonder what the mediaeval church would have done to anyone creating such a sculpture, to contradict the "holy book"?
@Petter does the bibble say that its flat & made out of cheese?
@FrayedBear It did, until the revised, revised, revised edition of the revised edition.
I was only wondering about an hour ago "where's Petter?" Now I know.
Gallivanting away on your annual medical trip?
Nothing medical about it. More like making friends and family in UK sick, after 2 years of freedom from my presence!
@Petter aha. There I thought that you have an annual Harley St. appointment for your everlasting problem.
