Many people on this site seem to have a fanatical almost religious obsession with comparison to those of a religious nature instead of examining and investigating the wierd and wonderful possibilities of life the universe and everything, I mean science by it's own admission isn't even close to explaining everything and much if it on the cutting edge relies on imaginary things.
Thank you to all those constructive illuminating comments for, neutral and against, i understamd better about some aspects but think some should look up the definition of what they purport to be.
Back when Star Trek TNG was current, I worked with a fundamentalist christian who was as equally addicted as I was. He knew my anti religious views, but sought me out for endless conversations, often leading from a recent episode … generally questioning god existence while digging deep into ‘the human condition.’
His attempts to rationalize both his fundamentalist religious zeal and intellectual curiosity was ..fascinating. I sometimes note the reverse when associating with fellow Atheists… They ‘know better’ than the existence of from 600 to 1 gods, but attempt to frame atheism within some rigid parameters that it doesn't fit… Reminiscent of an Asperger's perspective on life.. or the need for definite laws and rules, it’s as if, since religion is riddled with inconsistencies, they attack it, rather than fighting it’s overall restraints on humanity. Seems there are two camps…
I’ve a friend with Asperger’s, and we’d made a formidable debating team on various right-wing forums. He’d go after detailed inconsistencies, while I’d follow broader flaws in reason. ...I may be off in left field about now, but your description/ question led me here
Science is always improving and finding new things daily. I'm pro science. I talk of religion because I was once naive.
I imagine a whole bunch of us have been hurt by religion. Something that takes family, friends, jobs and self-esteem from you may cause a bit of obsession and hate. If we find fault, it's with good reason. Personally, I try my best to separate Christians who are good people and Christians who are hypocrites. I try always to investigate the wonderful possibilities of the universe and that's something that keeps me going but I see little of that kind of thinking in the majority of religious people.
I used to be really obsessed with how wrong it was to be religious, but after a couple of years of just being angry all the time, I've since learned to just leave other people be and go on about my life without religion even entering my mind. It's much less stressful than fighting with all your friends about how their core beliefs are wrong and making them mad at you.
The common thread for most people on this site is the lack of belief in God or gods, so it shouldn't be surprising that members find reason to discuss living as non-theists and dealing with issues that arise from being in families, workplaces, and communities in which there's prejudice and discrimination toward those who aren't believers. And there's actually quite a lot of variety in the discussions on this site. By all means, though, post some new topics you find more interesting and I'm sure people will comment.
I just find it odd that god and religion come up so often.
Hmm… I'm just not seeing it as overwhelming or out of balance. I'd expect a lot of discussion about the effects of religion on a site like this, and here's what I see on the posts listed on the front page:
I'm seeing a ton of nonreligious posts about a wide variety of topics.
