Are you sure about Sweden? I have read that Finland is trialling it and their results have been positive.

It is reported to be an improvement on an assessment based welfare state which reports say is inefficient to run and very de-motivating to its citizens.

It would be the way to ensure that people can maintain a basic standard of living in a world which machines and computers make the heavy lifting.

Different culture. It would not work in the U.S. Too many people would take advantage of it even if they can work and contribute. Too many others would be offended that so many people are taking advantage of the system. I personally believe that if one is able to work and contribute and provide for him or herself one should. I also believe that when someone needs help to get on their feet, society should help and provide and help that person while they are down, until they can stand on their own.

It's a great example of how well socialism can work but the US would never buy into it regardless of how well it works in Sweden. That's just the way most citizens in the US roll.

If this money comes from taxes we have a similar system. They call it welfare, and the more children you have the more the wage.

I think ultimately, a basic income is inevitable. With increased automation in industry, and that starting to seep into service jobs, we're looking at a vastly different economy over the next 20 years or so. I'm glad Sweden is doing this and finding it to be relatively successful early on.
