Just heard and read about Jodie Foster's rant against superhero movies. You can look it up for yourself if you are curious.
She is misquoted as to these movies "wrecking the earth" More like wrecking the expectations of people, but when she
says she makes films becasue she, "Make movies because there are things I have to say in order to figure out who I am or my place in the world, or for me to evolve as a person.” Thats all fine and good, just don't expect many people to watch them.
People go to movies to lose themselves for a couple hours, same as the theme parks Foster so dreads. The Movie industry is going for bigger and better, louder and more wowing becasue thats the only way they are going to get butts in the over priced seats.
You take a family of four to the movies, get popcorn, a hot dog and drink and you are shelling out over a hundred dollars. For that kind of price, I want to be wowed. Or I'll wait for the DVD to hit my library and watch it at home for free.
I saw 'Safe Room' and forever forgot about her.
I'm with Jodie. Missing movies with relevance.
She's just mad because she got turned down for the part of Batgirl.
She is an actress and director who has higher standards than most.
what a pile of bullshit she talks. films and tv are first and foremost about making money as are many things in the human world but especially films she is in. if she was being honest she would have been in the low budget films or offered her services for nothing rather than arguably one of the best shyco films ever ie silence of the lambs. she may well cherry pick the very best of top films to suit her very being that are are very good films but id say its more because she is such a top ranking actress she can do that.
She is mainly an accomplished producer and director at this point. Pretty sure she could leave the business a wealthy woman, if she desired.
exactly my point
I’m with Jodie. I’ve spent more time perusing Netflix (for example) than watching it’s movies.. They’re crap, 95% worthless. I may get 15 minutes into one before wising up … if half the time wondering, how fuckedup is this nation ..that people are so desperate or willing to waste their time, senses or minds on something like ‘this’?
I’d get more out of walk down the street… And ‘Super Heros?’ Fortunately, my kids were never so hardup for ..entertainment as to go for those. I’d take my family to the nearest river, or up a hill, or to the beach… Sure would like to take a walk with Jodie..
@Manzeppi Thinking back - you’re right, and it’s apparently taken me nearly a lifetime to figure that out I like stories pushing, yet not crossing the line of believability.. Anymore, or perhaps forever - that’s a difficult story to write... Maybe that’s why I’ve just returned from a long and interesting walk..
I don't give a fig about what Jodie Foster thinks about anything.
I don't think that bigger is necessarily better. CGI seems to be making a lot of superhero movie directors lazy. There's an over reliance on special effects at the expense of a decent story. There's also a tendency to equate being slow and badly lit with being meaningful.
Just compare the tedious Batman v Superman with the Heath Ledger Batman film which used special effects for a purpose, had strong characters and plot and had so much more suspense and tension.
I love Jodie Foster. She's an intelligent, thoughtful woman and has some interesting ideas.
I don't think there's anything intrinsically wrong with superhero films, and different people go to the cinema for different reasons. There's plenty of money in the film industry and the studios should be making films to appeal to all tastes.
Was in a desert region of Oregon with family when my sister decided to ‘take us to see’ the latest Batman movie. 10 minutes in.. I asked her forgiveness before leaving.. Talked with the college students tending the cinema, walked across the local dunes in the midday heat, ending up watching waterfowl I’d never seen.. nor will I forget. Perhaps it’s no wonder I’m alone
@Varn Sounds a good choice. I expect the waterfowl were way more interesting to watch.
@Cariad1066 Yes, I was in Klamath Falls, Oregon, for the 1st time.. An amiture birder, having left my optics at home, I had to ‘go to them.’ Bald Eagles & Egrets everywhere! My Sister understood, my nephew, sitting next to me was puzzled beyond belief … sister just handed me the van keys … it was a double matinee After a trek across the 108 degree dunes I wandered into a police station, they fully understood, and directed me to the best bird watching location in the area!
