If someone's belief is blood transfusions are wrong and they'd rather die or let their children die than receive one, then I don't have to respect that at all.
@KarenMorgan do you speak as a medical practitioner or a concern general citizen? Although extremely sad, you cannot legally interfere medically against religious or non wishes
@Lukian, I speak as a concerned citizen. However, my husband is a medical professional and has dealt with Jehovah's witnesses who secretly choose to receive the blood transfusion rather than die. But some JW do choose to die instead of getting a blood transfusion, and that's their choice. But letting your children die because of your religious beliefs is just plain wrong.
@KarenMorgan I agree. It is.
I'm not going to seriously acknowledge horseshit. I might say "Yup, you're a Christian. Want a cookie?"
im on the fence on this one. while i do feel that most religions have taken things to some pretty weird extremes, i think that the base reason for all religion was to explain, what at the time, was unexplainable. things like plagues, earthquacks, floods and such. and also to make folks feel less alone, like there was something bigger watching out for them. those two things by themselves i have no objection to. its when they started killing people for being different and things like that i don't care for. so while i respect the origional intent of religion, i don't exactly respect what they turned into over time.
Okay, fair enough, but where do you draw the line? Outside religion some people think adult men should be allowed to have sex with adolescent boys.
In religion, what about honor killings, or parents withholding medical treatment from their kid? Respect people, but when we start to believe that ideas are on equal footing with people we are entering dangerous territory in my opinion.
@JimG pretty much my point. i respect the idea that someone is watching out for them, and i respect that the explanations for a lot of things was based on what they had to work with at the time. they didnt have as much tech or as good of an understanding of scientific method to come to the conclusions we do today. but i don't respect the things you mentioned, rape, pedophilia, things like that i have no time for. a lot of people take things too far. not just in religion, but i don't base my level of respect on if you are religious or not, what matters to me is what you do because of it. how you treat others. ive met religious folks on both ends of the spectrum.
I don't have to "respect" anything. By law, I only have to tolerate certain things.
I can be as disrespectful, dismissive, and derisive, as I damned well please.
Bingo.
