But it seems to always get worse. Now we have nuclear weapons and even the environment is against us. The changes that must be made, now, are too great for our puny, selfish, mixed up brains and the inertia keeps us from slowing down. Even if we totally stopped having babies today the number is still way over unsustainable and mother nature would continue.

I can imagine it's especially fearful when living in a red state. The new Atlantic just came out and one article was "Imagine the Worst." Thing is it states, often democracies fail and that applies to all. So far it states no civil wars or other horrible things just as communism failed with few problems. Through all the environmental groups I have been involved the direction points to our system being totally unsustainable. We absolutely must reduce our numbers (nature is giving us a big boost in that direction) and start realizing what happens to the country happens to everyone. More of us (including immigrants) the worse things get. So far the business world is doing all it can to squelch that idea. They will also suffer. Why Vermont?

@JackPedigo I read that article too; it's a good one. I lived in Vermont as a teen, and like it there, despite the climate. I also have lots of relatives in New Hampshire, and my son will be in N. PA, so not too far away. Vermont is about as liberal as it gets in the eastern US, and housing costs are still reasonable there. The West is nice, too, but expensive, and climate change is a big concern there. My biggest obstacle now is fixing up my big old house, and making a decision! It's so true that our system is becoming unsustainable. My very progressive grand niece just had a baby, after vowing not to, but better her, I think, than more Duggers babies.

@Organist1 I remember visiting Vermont when I was stationed at Ft. Deven's near Boston. I liked it with all it's covered bridges. Climate Change is a concern everywhere. Seems like here we aren't as affected as most places but this weekend the temp is supposed to go down to +12 (the coldest I've experienced here is +16). It's never been that cold. We do get a week of just below freezing and a month (Nov.) of rain. Everything is on schedule but a little more extreme.

Do you have someone who could help with your house?

@JackPedigo Vermont is very picturesque, and especially in the fall. The one thing I didn't like was snowstorm after snowstorm until April. Your climate sounds nice, but 12? That is cold! It hasn't been that cold in SE PA in years, although once it got down to -2 about 25 years ago.

As far as someone helping me with house, not really. I have to dip into my savings and hire a few people. I do house painting myself pretty well.

@Organist1 Seems like every where someone wants to go there is a down sides. Perhaps the snow is a reason home prices are not extreme. Yes, plus 12 is cold and we always seem to have one week of low temps around 20 and the high around 30. Then it's gone and done. Seldom snow and what there is doesn't last. The only problem is the ferry system especially summers when there are tons of tourists. This year my house went up +43,000 in value (some 23%). I've heard of some that had over $100,000 in increase.

I was going to suggest Angie's list but heard there was a class action suite against them.

@JackPedigo I'm going to get a real estate agent. I just need to fix a few things so I can get to dollar for the place. House prices have really gone up around here, too, but they won't stay there forever.

@Organist1 I hope so. When the Fed finally gets it's act together and raises interest rates prices may start to go down. However, I just heard a report that this country is short 500,000 homes.
