Why people fall for bullshit, according to a scientist
I believe a factor that undermines one's BS detector has to do with self esteem. Wanting to be likeable to others may make someone subconsciously willing to accept rather than reject another's BS.
So that explains why I am such a cranky old man.
My bullshit meter hits maximum whenever I read anything from Marjorie Taylor Greene, Donald Trump, Ken Ham and Joel Osteen.
I can think of a MUCH longer list, except they all generally fall into these same categories.
My B.S. meter hits max before I even start reading anything from them. The name alone is enough.
You can lead a person to reason, but you can't make him/her think.
Our schools do a poor job of teaching how to think for yourself. They promote how to go along with what you are being told. This explains why it takes many so long to realize the bs they were or are taught...like religion and gods. If more people could think rationally, maybe religion would be less popular by now.
@Shaggy2018 The teaching of how to think instead of what to think goes against the grain for every dimwit teacher across the globe.
@anglophone I don’t know about all, but certainly a good many
@anglophone A couple of exceptions, but yeah.
@anglophone I guess every education system tries to teach students to be good little sheep, vs teaching them to be independent thinkers.
People fall for bullshit if it is repeated often enough and seems to fit what they want to hear or believe. If they think it gives their lives meaning they are on the road to having all the answers. Nobody wants to be wrong and everyone wants to have all the answers. If not now, sweety, in the sweet by and by. We see through a glass darkly now but then we will see face to face. (Up yours, Saul of Tarsus.)
Oh I agree that low education plays a big part as well as belief in the paranormal and the supernatural. A weak or strong mind also plays a part.
I went o parochial school, so believing in bullshit was expected and rewarded
@Canndue Same here……..The nuns taught it as if it were fact. To this day I can still remember “The profession of faith” and the “Hail Mary” like it was yesterday.
@CuddyCruiser this is sorta like comparing scars
Did your nuns have the little clickers when teaching when to stand, kneel and sit?
