So last time I was on here I talked about the difficulties of coming out to my family, both as an atheist and as gay and the subsequent fall out from that. Since I'm back almost two years later I figure its worth giving an update.

So firstly, I am still estranged from my family, doubt that's going to change anytime soon. But I am making new friends and its getting easier. I have an amazing roommate that helps out a lot and I've gotten into a lot of new hobbies that I'd of never been able to in my old life.

I'm still single, sadly. Dating is hard, possibly more so for weird little gay alien possums girls. Lol. Anyways this was all probably pointless, but it feels good to look back over the last year or so and realize how much I've grown.

Thanks for listening to me ramble!

Take it from someone a lot older, a human life is a long time, and things change a lot especially if you are an active person who gets involved. Five or ten years from now you will probably look back and think. "How did I get here."

And if I may hand out some pompus old person type advice, (sorry I know). If you are looking for a relationship, then one of the best ways, is not go on the dating round, but to pick hobbies where you do something real and social. Help out in a charity shop for an hour or two a week, volunteer to help in a community garden, or give reading classes for children, that way you have lots of human contact anyway, but you also raise your profile in the community and increase your circle of friends, then one day either you will bump into someone you like, or one of those friends will say. "Come and meet." Because if there is one thing no human can resist, its the thrill of matchmaking. ( They get it wrong most of the time, but hey that's life.)

Being true to yourself is the most important thing you can do in your life. The happier you are with yourself, others will see your qualities shine and hopefully your family and friends will love the new you in time.

Romance isn't everything and perhaps the real thing is worth waiting for. I don't know, since I'm still waiting for that, but have had a few tastes of definitely not the real thing.

Never lose hope though, as long as you love yourself as you are and want to be, life is good. You will find a new "family" of people who choose to be around you, if your birth family doesn't come around. Family we choose is often far more loving that family we are born into.

Sorry to hear of the estrangement from your family. That's a harm that cuts deep and keeps stinging. What's worse is realizing that (very likely), they are incapable of feeling any shame for their hurtfulness. Just know that you aren't the one doing the hurting, and that life is too short to waste time on on people who can't and won't ennoble your life.
