I'm not anti union but I wish the discussion were about regulating employers and having a staffed agency to deal with it. Instead of "go form your own new tiny agency for each individual building in the nation" and posting inspiration porn about the people uprooting their lives to try and accomplish this. There aren't as many inspirational posts about everyone who gets steamrolled in the process. We can't all afford to stand up against Amazon for the possible future benefit to worker rights.

For context- I've been thinking about this a lot because I currently work at Amazon. I've been looking for a better closer place so I applied at a local factory that makes car bumpers.
It is unionized.
I was informed they work 10 hr shifts Cool, I always prefer 4 10s to 5 8s. And then that they are running 6 days right now and frequently mandate 7 days....
No thanks.
I'll drive to Amazon.
(Even though they are literally making us go to and log in to our stations before going to clock in or we get written up. Which makes our 30 minute breaks down to 18-25 minutes depending how close you are to the time clock. An on 10 hour very physical shifts. Then they write us up for time theft for going to the bathroom in between if you are to far to make it back in under 5 minutes. It DOES happen. Alot. It does drop off after a week. But 2 active write ups at once for any reason and you're fired. Lucky I only have one heavy flow day a month although I have legit peed my pants more times there than other jobs. Still better than 7 10 hour days. And better benefits than pretty much anyone)

I'm not surprised. Having a union at a workplace only gives the potential of better treatment, pay, and benefits for workers, it does not ensure it by itself. I worked a little over five years in a job that was represented by a public employees union, at a university, and while the union got us great contracts for pay and benefits, etc., it proved to be toothless when it came to mistreatment by management, including blatant favoritism of an employee who was a kiss ass and favorite of one of the supervisors. Nobody in management was scared of the union when it came to how they treated the employees represented by the union.

Unions are staffed by people which means there will be a whole variety of solutions and implementation.

I'm so sorry that you are forced to work under such unfair conditions. I'm with you 7 10-hour days is brutal to the body and the psyche. Forced overtime should have national limitations imposed by law.

I'v always been a little annoyed with the whole union conversation because here it would just mean a different group of rural godnguns guys. Not necessarily better at all. That bumper factory just reinforced it. I applied for 3 different staffing agencies because Im in a bad spot with my boss at Amazon. Turns out it's way worse.
It's all good I'm just super pissed off at it all today
