I'm so tired of hearing people say "I have very intelligent friends who support trump." I don't know if it's that they don't want to badmouth their friends or don't understand the definition of intelligence, but I'd like to get the issue out in the open. I call it "fake intelligence", for instance my college roommate, a trumper, was the international CEO of Deloitte & Touche, one of the top accounting firms in the world and an actuary. Maybe on paper, and testing he showed intelligence and he understood math, but if you buy into trump's lies and idiocy there's no intelligence there in my opinion.
Intelligence has been defined in many ways: the capacity for abstraction, logic, understanding, self-awareness, learning, emotional knowledge, reasoning, planning, creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving, or just the ability to acquire and apply knowledge and skills.
But most supposedly intelligent people are only intelligent regarding certain areas or certain fields. If you do well on tests because you have a good memory and memorized the books you read, does that make you intelligent? Is a rocket scientist intelligent about archeology? There are book smart people and street smart people, if they are intelligent shouldn't it be the same thing?
My opinion is anyone who believes trump's lies, believes the man isn't an idiot and is qualified to run the United States, is not intelligent, by any stretch of the imagination or by any of the definitions above. Might they be good in their particular field or occupation, yes, and that might make them intelligent in that area only.
Trump said there are states that allow women to bear children in the ninth month and it's wrong and needs to stop. He said we're building a wall in Colorado. On his way back from Saudi Arabia, sitting in a room full of people in Israel, he said I just got back from the Middle East. Not to mention suggesting we should drink bleach to cure covid. The man himself is a complete idiot and anyone supporting him can therefore not be intelligent. (Of course we're ignoring those who say but I like his policies because that has nothing to do with the issue because they could just as easily pick someone else who isn't an idiot, doesn't lie and who has those policies).
I await your comments.
It has often been said that intelligence is is impossible to define, and that therefore it is probably impossible to invent a test for it. Yet I think, that we all know roughly what the word means, or we would not use the word. And it could therefore be, that the confusion happens because there are several forms, according to the choice of attempted definition. One of which is of course to be able to do and pass academic tests, in skills like maths and spelling, though that proves little more than certain sorts of specific brain functions at above certain levels.
Yet there is also certainly another definition possible, which could be called "working intelligence", by which I would mean the ability to solve real world issues to a high level, and achieve an accurate picture of the world within which we live. And that would require more than just academic brain skills, but also even more importantly perhaps certain properties of personality or character. Especially: commitment, a willingness to work long and hard at problems, honesty, an unwillingness to accept cognitive dissonance and/or second rate answers, selflessness, an unwillingness to accept things more readily because you like them, and sceptical values, being unwilling to accept anything as given. ( Many of which qualities may be exact opposites of many academic measures of I.Q. ) I would therefore say, that to my mind, honesty and personal integrity, are perhaps more important than brain power alone in creating a working intelligence.
. . . the significant difference between intelligence and stupidity is that intelligence has its' limits.
I am at a loss how ANYONE could listen to trump speak for two minutes and not know he is, (for lack of a better term) an ass clown. I feel sorry for those who believe his dumb ass.
If you have a vested selfish interest, in being allowed to continue to act like a clown yourself, even though you should be clever enough to know better. Then .......
I think most intelligent people have come to the conclusion that the 2 party system is basically same shit, different wrappers. Criticise Biden/ Democrats and it is like committing blasphemy to many democrat supporters, who automatically class you as a trumper.
Maybe your college roomie is intelligent but as a very rich person he may not care that Trump is a liar and a con, so long as he promotes policies that increases the wealth of your friend. Your friend may be smart but just a douche bag with no principles beyond looking out for number one and to hell with everyone else. That's how the poor eventually turn on the rich and eat them alive, thinking of the Dutch uprising or perhaps the guillotine and the French Revolution.
Actuaries are a nightmare to play poker with, they are usually very gifted in the ability to crunch numbers, a friend I used to play poke with was an actuary who never studied for the exam and just challenged it and crushed it, very hard to bluff a cat like that.
People who use the terms intelligent people and highly religious together are really not clear on the concept as these two terms are like acid and water. Dogmatic belief in a sky daddy does not pair well with a logical outlook on life, granted there are many cases for highly intelligent people acting in an insane manner but this is still not a good pairing.
As I mentioned in the post policies aren't part of the equation.
I completely agree that Trump is a liar and an idiot, but that doesn't mean everyone who supports him is.
There are intelligent people who are highly religious and value policies such as banning abortion and no gun control more highly than other policies. Regardless of whether you believe Trump's lies you can rely on him to champion such policies, particularly when compared to any democrat.
A lot of people follow Trump and do believe his lies. He is probably more likely to win the presidency than any other republican (when he lost he had the second highest number of votes in US history), and winning is the most important thing in US politics. Voting for a different republican with similar policies but who is less likely to win is not an optimal strategy.
Intelligent doesn't equal nice, and someone who is intelligent can still be racist, or value their gun rights over peoples' lives, or not want tax money to be spent on food stamps and medicare for the poor etc.
Also, your definition of intelligence is too narrow. Everyone who is intelligent in their particular field has many other areas they know nothing about. Intelligence is a positive quality, but I disagree with your assertion that people aren't intelligent simply because you strongly disagree with them on issues that are important to you.
Apparently you missed the part about policies in my post. And I never called anyone a racist or an idiot (other than trump) it's all about intelligence. Not about politics. Or religion. Not about issues. It's whether someone who is an idiot, racist, lying criminal is qualified to run the United States. And in my opinion and apparently not yours if you believe they are you're not intelligent based on any definition of the term
I didn't miss the bit about policies in your post, I just disagree with it.
Of course Trump isn't qualified to run the US, but he will enact policies a lot of people (intelligent and otherwise) want so those people will support and vote for him.
