I might be half deaf for the rest of my life...

Three weeks ago I was required to be at a homecoming dance for my school, to chaperone. That night I caught a "bug" that was going around and by Monday had to call out. It felt like covid or the flu, I was out for 2 days but by Wednesday felt good enough to go to work. Although I felt better my sinuses had started draining and by thursday my voice was gone. I went to urgent care on Saturday as nothing had cleared up and I was tired of having no voice. They said it was "allergies" gave me a steroid shot and sent me home. By Wednesday I knew I had a sinus infection, an ear infection and swelling around my eyes...still couldnt talk. I went to urgent care again thursday afternoon and they said yep its a sinus infection with a mild ear infection, gave me 5 days of antibiotics and sent me home. By friday night I had lost all hearing in my right ear. I didnt think much of it, my voice was back, my sinuses had cleared up, I figured my ear would too. Skip a week to today. I havent been able to hear out of my right ear in a little over a week. I had an appointment with my primary Doctor so I had figured I'd just wait to see him and was just dealing with the frustration of being unable to hear.

Today my doctor told me I may never hear out of my right ear again. He's scheduling an emergency appointment with an Ear nose and throat doctor for me for tomorrow but warned me that the whole in my eardrum caused by an infection may have caused permanent hearing loss to the point where i may not hear out of that ear ever again.

I have surgery scheduled to have a full hysterectomy on the 18th, I've been needing, wanting and waiting for this surgery since I was 16, half my life. Now 15 days before, I find out I may be half deaf the rest of my life and why? I went to the urgent care TWICE. Something I never do! I tough everything out, always have but this time I went. I can't even be mad at myself for not going bc I went!

Music sounds awful now, at least what I can hear of it. I karaoke with friends all the time but I've put it off for weeks because I can't hear myself or the music well enough to carry a tune. I don't know if this will effect my surgery on the 18th but my job is on the line bc I was already scheduled to miss a month of work for recovery and now I'm having to miss extra days ahead of surgery just to see if there is some hope of getting at least some of my hearing back.

When it rains, it pours and I'm drowning.

I have partial hearing loss due to working in heavy industry when I was young, that was in the days long before health and safety, it would probably surprise many younger people just how new those ideas are. But it is also rue that there is a lot that can be done for it now, and partial recovery is not impossible.

Very sorry to read of your loss. I lost a big part of my hearing to a viral infection in 1984.

We experience the world though our senses, and such a loss cuts into our quality of life. Medicine is constantly advancing, but if it's worth it to you, you have to be your own advocate. I hope that you recover some or all of your hearing.
