When I seventeen working as a VW mechanic, I had an accident. I had to change the fuel tank valve in my BOSSES 59 VW van. The fuel tank, The fuel valve is on the bottom is located over the engine area, and according to th F'ing Boss the tank was empty, maybe a quart left.

The actual amout turned out to be several gallons, and I was drenched gas, and pans laying every where, and there was spatering gas that was spinkling all over the place.

Remember I have to change the valve from underneath, so I am Soaked to the bone in gasoline, was beginning to be chemically burn.

I got the other valve inserted, and partially threaded. I quickly grabbed a wrench and made a quarter, and hit the battery cable on the starter, and poooff (I mean explosion). I was on fire from my waist up along with all the burning pans. Yea it was my bad, but they were suppose to be training me. Why not tell me to disconnect the battery.

We were switching shops, so I am on my own. I started to run, but heard the flames fan, and remembered my Boy Scout training, and started rolling and beating the flames out.

After that I ran next door, the opperating shop and yelled fire, and grabbed the extniguisher, and put the flame out. A couple months of second degree burns have left me with idea that I don't want to die in a fire.

Any one else ever catch on FIRE?

I've never suffered worse than an oven-burn, which, given my pyromanic tendencies, is something of a wonder. The nearest I got was when I decided to revive a dead fire in my garden by pouring a lick of petrol directly from a 5-litre plastic bottle onto it. Predictably, a flame shot from the ashes straight up the liquid column and ignited the bottle in my hand. Reactively, I flung the bottle to the ground, where it disintegrated and resulted in my patio becoming a sea of flame for the next 10 minutes. Fortunately, my neighbours did not witness this, as they always suspected me of being an idiot and I was loath to provide them with concrete proof.
I once set fire to the side of their house, but that's another story.

I think that was criminal negligence to allow a child, and someone seventeen is a child, to do that dangerous of a job untrained and unsupervised.

If you had panicked that could easily have been deadly.

Did you continue to work there?

And no, I've never personally been on fire.

Yea, but I didn't get any pay while I was recovering, and quit there when I found another job.

No but I imagine it’s a terrible experience. I did have a couple of 1st cousins that suffered 3rd degree burns in a propane explosion.

Never been caught on fire except in dreams. I'm a hairy guy though so fire is one of my only phobias.

Not as badly as you have my friend.
I had a large wood stove,
I was cooking prawn crackers in hot oil,
a set of tongs fell from above, hit the hot oil, sprung open and sprayed me with boiling oil, (no shirt - may have been good or bad)
I managed to shield my daughter who was behind me and throw the pan of oil out a window before running into the bathroom and into a cold shower.
We lived too far from a hospital so I had ice packs on my side all night,
my guts would be in pain from the cold,
but when I took the packs off for a minute, the burning was life a hot knife.
Next morning I had a blister from my hip to my chest,
had a big purple scar for about 15 years and it faded, now you have to be looking to see it.
Burns are the worst.
