Clever people are often successful, they are great opportunists who barely miss chances. They are selfish, ruthless and manipulative. You can only win around them when you play their games. They are fantastic users.
Not all clever people are intelligent.
"Clever" is a synonym for "intelligent."
I grew up in a family of six highly intelligent musicians. I'm a great problem solver. Problem-solving is clever.
At age 12, I rescued my little brother Lee when he fell through the ice while ice skating. We lived on a lake in Michigan. All of the other kids were screaming and useless. Quickly I turned to Tony, 14, who lived there (five houses down from our house).
"Are there oars under that rowboat?" I asked Tony urgently. Yes. "Quick, let's push the boat onto the ice and use the oars as poles to reach Lee." I was thinking ahead. Needed Tony's strength and weight. Lee was weakly jumping up to catch a breath and tiring fast. Hypothermia.
When we reached the hole, I ordered: "Tony, grab the back waistband of my pants and don't let go. I'm going to lean over the edge into the water and grab Lee's jacket. You need to counter-weight me.... Now PULL and don't let go!"
Together we hauled Lee into the rowboat like a frozen lump. Meanwhile, Tony's mother called my Mom who piled blankets in the car and drove to get us.
At home, Mom put Lee in a hot bath and handed him a mug of hot chocolate. Lee was shivering so violently he spilled every drop into the bath.
I will never forget it.
@LiterateHiker Well said
You are confusing cleverness with deviousness, cunning and slyness
or else you are projecting.
I have just been taken advantage of by someone who is very clever
LenHazell53 I do not think we could really use the word devious because they fully believe in what they are saying, just as you may fully believe in what Darwin found . They do have their weak spots though and science will find them out.
@LuxBear In what way might I have taken advantage of you?
And if you are speaking of someone else, one sly devious person does not mean all intelligent people are to be tarred with the same brush.
@LenHazell53 Not you of course
You are responsible for your own choices and actions.
Eleanor Roosevelt said, "No one can make you feel inferior unless you let them." In the same vein, no one can take advantage of you without your permission.
@LuxBear "I have just been taken advantage of by someone who is very clever"
Then learn from the experience and if you are clever/intelligent you will not be fooled again, if you, however, decide that being clever is a fault and something you want to despise, you will be a victim all of your life.
'Only a fool learns from his own mistakes. The wise man learns from the mistakes of others.'
Otto Von Bismarck
