When someone's mind is said to be corrupted or indoctrinated with bad information: why is it called brainwashing? Shouldn't brain washing imply that the corruption, illogicalness and filth is being cleaned from someone's mind?

I think that it came from an early cold war myth, that there was a method in use, which did indeed involve emptying the brain of memories first, and then putting new ones back. We now know that is not possible of course, ( Because you die, among other things. ) but we are talking about a myth from the nineteen forties and fifties, and given the state of progress, that in medical terms, was only just out of the Stone Age compared to today.
