Madelyn was probably a borderline personality and seemed rather crazy at the tragic end of her life, but for all her flaws and complexities, we owe her a debt of gratitude for her pioneering work. In some ways she was the perfect person for the job she took on, in that particular era.

The author is, if I am reading that right, Madalyn Murray O'Hair. I am pretty sure she meant this as the old world 'he' which refers to humanity, not to men. That last interpretation is new.
In other words: I am pretty sure she meant no harm to anyone.
Not only can you be good without God, you can be better.
