A little known fact, there are just as many Atheists that grew up in Islam as their are Atheists that grew up in Christianity, on a percentage basis. That's how it is with people, there are always going to be a certain percentage that will reject the religious programming and call bull shit and it doesn't matter which religion it is, some people just see the truth and have the courage to call bull shit.
Depending upon what point in history you are living in, that can be tolerated, ignored or lead you to a painful death, life's funny that way.
My late partner, from Iran, rejected religion from the time she could reason. Her mother fostered her critical thinking especially on this subject. The problem with the post is that in most Moslem countries one is forbidden to express any questions concerning religion. How can a survey be made when there is fear about coming out?
As stated in the original post, depending upon the point in history will determine the level of tolerance afforded the non-religious, regardless of the religion in power.
We here in the U.S. for the time being can be religious or not and live our lives without fear of being killed for mocking Christ or God. For the time being. There are people in this country who would like to take that freedom of choice away and they call themselves patriots and lovers of the Constitution.
She appears to be an atheist, not a Muslim….
Everybody has to start somewhere, I run into people all the time who when the religious question comes up and I respond Atheist, they dismiss that and want to know what religion I grew up in as a child. Religious types tend to be religion focused to the exclusion of Atheism.
The one formerly Muslim woman I know had her father threaten her life for not conforming to his religion. She managed to flee to the US, but she has both manic-depression and obesity to deal with. It is horribly sad. And it has actually gotten worse for her, but that's a long story...
I think many conform to not die a violent death.
@Sorcha The incidents of public beheading and stoning are unlikely to occur often in the US. Women are frequently murdered in the US for "shaming" the family.
I have longed believed that in all human societies that a proportion of people are born inclined towards religion, a proportion are born inclined not to believe in religion, and a large proportion just go along with religion unenthusiastically to fit in with the group and the culture. The degree to which non religious people identify themselves is usually a reflection of the openness and tolerance of that society, and as we know Islamic societies are generally not open or tolerant due to religious influence. So, I suspect there are as many atheists in Islamic countries as anywhere else. They are just more repressed.
Within all cultures and nations that are dominated by believers, we are a small, more intelligent, courageous minority...
