My uncle passed away and his funeral is Tuesday. I have decided I should not go, even though I feel I should pay my respects. I have been estranged from my family for several years, not necessarily due to my atheism, though that is certainly a factor. But his only offspring (a 54yo woman) and I used to be best friends, but I could not in good conscience remain close to her since she wholeheartedly embraced trumpism. There are many other factors in play, but that was the last straw for me. So, I will go to the cemetery later this week and anonymously place some flowers. I just feel my presence, even if I spoke to no one, perhaps BECAUSE I would speak to no one, would be a disruption.
I would probably do the same as you, condolences.
The moment you lost your uncle I'm sure you felt as bad as you were ever going too. your uncle is the only one who won't notice you there and the only reason you feel bad. you don't have to prove to anyone how much you do or don't care as you already know.
Do your thing. Ceremonies are for the living, not the dead. If the dead is your concern, honor him however you feel appropriate.
If it’s the living, that’s a whole separate matter
I am sorry for your loss. Life must go on. Do what your conscience dictates, mourn your way, your style.
We know he’ll never know … so it’s what feels right to you. I also think it’s healthy, if uncomfortable and unfortunate.. to cut our ties with trump supporters, wherever they pop up in our lives. I know a lot of folks who’ve purged their facebook ‘friends’ and relatives, too; as have I. And, I’ve cousins of that same ilk.. Stay strong ~
I am estranged from my family as well and that's hard. I am very sorry for your loss.
