I was meeting a friend at Braum's and got there early and rather than sitting in my car, I went in. Immediately, a man wearing a Trump cap made a beeline toward me as I looked at the ice cream in the freezers.
He said, "Do work here?" Since I was dressed in a short denim skirt and boots, I thought this was a strange question and took it as a come-on. Instead of saying, "Do I look like I work here?" I said, "No."
He asked, "Do you want to?" He was obviously not a manager and I said, "No." He asked, "Why not?" I said, "Because I teach online--why would I quit to work here?
His next question was "What do you teach?" When I replied, "Literature and writing," he asked, "Could you teach me to read?" I said that I could, but would charge $30 an hour to tutor him. I walked down the next aisle with him following behind, still asking inane questions. Finally, he said, "I'm looking for egg nothing ice cream. I wish that they carried it all year 'round. It makes me mad." (That is supposed to to be egg n-o-g ice cream, but auto-correct insists that the latter word does not exist.)
Having had enough of him, I said, "I imagine there's a lot that makes you mad."
"Why?"
"Because you are a Trump supporter."
Immediately his "I"m a good guy" attitude turned surly. "That makes me mad about a lot of things?"
He was getting mad--INSTANTLY mad.
"Typically, yes."
He started to tell me off when my friend walked again. Without saying another word, I went to meet him. The guy got his ice cream, walked over to the grocery register, then came back to say to my friend (who is male), "Don't ask this woman to teach you to read."
My friend said, "I already know how to read."
The man stalked off and paid for his ice cream.
My friend asked, "What's that all about?" I told him I would tell him when we found a table. Even though the guy bought nothing else, he still managed to walk by the table where we sat (though it was out of his way) once we had ours.
How was your Wednesday afternoon?
Would be funny as a fictional story but as he represents an unpleasantly large segmant of our population, . . . bring to mind the old saying, "and that's why we can't have nice things."
Earlier tonight, I unfriended and blocked someone I've known for over 20 years.
The conversation started several days ago, and the topic was Hunter Biden's laptop.
While I disagreed with him, I never insulted him. However, things devolved to the point where I was a "lib" and was being "owned".
I reminded him that we'd known each other for more than 2 decades, and during that entire time he'd always known that I've always been a moderate and an Independent.
He also knew that I've always loathed 45 and was calling him a serial con man for all that time. Note: That came up frequently because he was a fan of "The Apprentice" series. So my hatred for the rotting mango wasn't new information to him.
As soon as he started saying that 45 was falsely maligned, and that both Hunter and his father needed to "go down", I knew our friendship had ended.
I exited without another word.
This isn't about politics, it's about basic morality and ethics.
Clearly, his and mine are diametrically opposed.
I don't even feel bad. Just relieved.
Many of the MAGAs seem perfectly ok with morality and ethics when it allows them to seek revenge. That Evangelicals and other supposedly religious folks are willing to suspend their judgment for an Orange Con man of such obvious low morality then insist on policing the actions and choices of others that do not have any effect on their lives is perplexing.
@Gwendolyn2018 You are a practical and wise woman.
Those Red Hat MAGA guys seem to be attracted to you like moths to a candle! Then you burn their wings!
Stellar replies to his questions by you - and then also your friend's reply of "I already know how to read" are perfection! You sure have more interesting conversations than I ever get, but that's okay with me! It's raining and I'm staying in for the evening.
You do find the odd ducks, don't you. My afternoon was very calm.
