It's been my experience that no public figure should be permitted to function behind a veil of secrecy without any checks and balances, because the temptation to act selfishly is too great even for those with the best of intentions.

For decades the Supremes have enjoyed an almost ridiculous degree of unchallenged independence and secrecy, with the fiction that they were intellectually superior and thus deserving to function unfettered by us commoners. I always knew that was bullshit, but I'm a little taken aback by how intellectually inferior and corrupt they actually are.

Wonder how the change is affecting the more open-minded and caring for the rule of law and the Constitution. Talk about a frustrating position.

@JackPedigo I have a few attorney friends who have always looked at the Supreme Court in a rather idealized manner, and the past few years seems to have broken them a bit. They still really want to believe in the superiority of the court, but they're unable to logically justify what's happened to it, particularly the abortion rights reversal. Hopefully the more caring attorneys will find us a way around this.

@Lauren Unfortunately, it might come to a critical moment before real change comes about. Just hope that moment doesn't come too late.

As one former President of Mexico said, and l'm paraphrasing, "The United States is just as corrupt as Mexico, but we admit it".

And he's admitting this because????

His change of heart due resulting from his departure from the evangelicals doesn't seem to be enough to justify it ... it would be interesting to know more.

@Lauren Indeed!

Really highlights why the way we appoint justices to the Supreme Court has to change.

That would require the approval of the Supremes and, just as politicians will never vote against their personal benefits, I don't see the justices doing it either. They quite believe the myth of their superior knowledge.

And term limits for Scotus. Life time appointments for Federal judges is ridiculous and dangerous. That much power with no accountability is insane.

Senator Whitehouse is trying to shed greater light on that, also. Much has to change in our nation for real progress to actually gain traction.
