For me, one if the hardest parts about being in a relationship with someone who used to be religious, is having to filter my humorously intended comments and derisions regarding the absurdity of faith based spirituality.

Attacks on the belief system are often seen as attacks on the individuals that they may still love. Hell, I might even still love them.
That doesnt mean I don't find their belief system sad, ridiculous, and hilarious.

I have every intention of lampooning the shit out of every religion and rigid system of beliefs until the day I die. I TRY not to aim that deprecating humor at individuals who believe in those dogmas. Unless, that is, they have sacrificed their humanity on the alter of their god(s).

Once you've put your religion before the well being of your fellow life forms, particularly friends and family, its open season.

Anybody else in, or previously been in, a relationship with a late blooming agnostic who still has ties to folks in their past organized religious community?

Any advice to share on bridging that gap to comedy freedom?

Iā€™m a Christian and I have been in relationships and dated non Christians and non believers. I wouldnt want the other person to feel like they had to sensor themselves for me.

Being atheist or agnostic can be a lonely business. Personally, I find it hard to find people with similar ideas, and humor. Unfortunately, the majority of the time, religion, and stupidity go hand-in-hand. I can handle some degree of ignorance, but stupidity, I can't abide. I can't count how many relationships that I have sabotaged once I find the person is more religious than they let on. I consider myself intelligent, and we'll spoken, but far from an intellectual. I get why people want or need faith, I do, but it always seems to go to far, and faith leads to intolerance, and finally to zealotry. On the flipside, a life of pure intellect can lead to intolerance as well. It would seem that those that share that middle ground have become quite elusive, but one cannot stop the search.
It should seem that I have meandered away from the point at hand. In short, I find it hard to not offend someone who is even moderately religious. They always end up taking a jab, or an off-hand comment personally, and then it all seems to unravel, no matter how cordial one tries to be. Eventually you can't hide your true self, and neither can they. "To thine own self be true"......

I can't be with someone that is religious that close in my life. I consider fidelity to objective reality a value. I respect their right to believe whatever, but there is a social consequence to allowing fear to override rational faculties. Work with? Talk? Dinner? Debate? Sure! Close to my intimate thoughts and life? Not so much...

Can toy relate buddy. I'm not sure if we still together but last time I saw my gf we had a fight about religion and she was screaming at me like "you must respect others beliefs" I was laughing at her face fucking calmly like how could I... Haha anyway I think it's over for good like. She just knows I'm a militant atheist and probably she just wants to keep her retarded beliefs. So I decided to fuck that all and joined here. šŸ˜€

Not "toy" but totally. šŸ™‚
