I guess it happened both ways: by contagion / education and by violence. And during the early Middle Ages a lot of people simply became Christians because their chief converted, mostly for political reasons (like Clovis from France, or what became France some centuries later)

Yep, conversion by way of the sword, not peace and love, as many Christians who haven't read the bible think.
