An interesting reaction from the French crowd.
Best to separate sport from politics. In my opinion, if you feel strongly enough about the nationality of your opponent, rather than refuse to acknowledge them after the game is over you should refuse to play them in the first place.
Better still, leave politics at home when you enter a field of play.

I presume the crowds were booing because they thought it was lacking in courtesy for the winner not to shake hands with her beaten opponent…which it was of course, and that she was not showing the normal etiquette of good sportsmanship as expected. It is understandable under the circumstances for Ukrainian players not to want to shake hands with Belarusian players as effectively their countries are at war because Belarus has taken sides with Russia by backing Putin’s rhetoric and actions, and has facilitated the firing of missiles into Ukraine from Belarus’s territory. I doubt if the French crowd was actually thinking of that when they showed their displeasure though, because it’s easy for those who are not personally affected to see things in purely sporting terms and not understand the national symbolism and pride involved in denying such a handshake.

It’s impossible to divorce sport from the real world..and while it’s fine to espouse views that politics should have no place on the sporting circuit, sadly, it is nigh on impossible in reality to do so.

Since when have missiles been fired into Ukraine from Belarus territory? I have gathered that Russia is siting tactical nukes (not strategic) in Belarus to help "the West" understand how Russia would feel if NATO sites missiles in Ukraine as they have in Poland.
Unfortunately sports are now politicised, especially the Olympics, the friendly games, which is a great shame considering Olympics are awarded to cities not countries. The only time this mix of politics and sport was useful was when South Africa was boycotted which helped hasten the end of apartheid in that nation.
Anyways, posted as the crowd reaction was not really expected but perhaps should have been considering all the protests in France lately.

@puff It has been proved that some missiles which have hit targets in the western areas of Ukraine could only have been fired from Belarusian soil…the trajectory has been calculated. As for the rest…I’d remind you that Poland is a NATO member and is entitled therefore to full protection of that organisation including the siting of missile sites as part of a defence against just such attacks that Russia has made against Ukraine which is not a NATO member and subsequently didn’t have the benefit of such defences. Russia would never have invaded Ukraine had it been a NATO member…a better example of the necessity to join has never been more clearly shown than Putin’s invasion. Ironically two nations bordering Russia who had always remained neutral to joining NATO, namely Sweden & Finland have now decided they must come under their defensive umbrella by joining . Talk about Putin shooting himself in the foot ….it’s only a matter of time that his overreach and miscalculation will dawn on the Russian people and then he’ll be ousted from within. Sadly, thousands more, many of them Russian conscripts & mercenaries will have died along with those defending their country from invasion in Ukraine.

@Marionville You are correct but failed to mention Ukraine has also fired missiles into Belarus and Poland. A great shame treaties have been allowed to lapse that removed ballistic missiles from Europe.
Yes, it is a great shame this war continues. That Boris Johnson goes to Texas to drum up GOP support to keep the war going.
NATO does not want war with Russia and are doing everything not to join in because if body bags started coming home there would be no public support. They just want a stand off, a new cold war because it is good for their economies. Take away UK and US funding and Ukraine would have negotiated peace within the first months. Russia has yet to utilise their air force.
Ukraine has not been accepted into the EU because of corruption. Ukraine cannot join NATO, according to their own charter, because of civil war but it did not stop NATO arming and training them since 2014. It is open knowledge the Minsk agreement was conducted in bad faith so Ukraine may prepare for war with Russia after the US initiated coup.
Did Finland and Sweden hold referendums to join NATO ie who decided? Why is NATO uninterested in who blew up Germany's critical energy infrastructure ie what's the point of having them if that attack is ignored? Anyways, looks like NATO will be back in Serbia soon, hopefully they send Finnish and Swedish troops.

Personally nationalism group was just an accident where I happen to be born. My ego caught up when I was representing my country in international sports. What was really more Important was doing a Sport that I individually loved. If I didn't love my work, family and health , I've got nothing.
