Instead of taking common sense action, on something like economic problems, or in this case, gun control, they offer up the usual culture war bullshit, to distract from the real issue or problem, and their followers swallow it up, like pigs eating shit, instead of realizing they are being conned with snake oil substitutes for real action and improvement on the status quo.
