I'm so glad there was no internet or social media when I was growing up. I mean, REALLY glad.
I was poor back then...
I was moderately poor and I don't think I ever knew it? (as a kid)
I had enough to eat, clothes on my back, books to read (library) and friends.
Same. Kids today don't know what it's like to play in the woods, ride bikes, or just do any of the fun things we did as kids. I have a lot of kids, but I have to "barter" them to go outside to play. "If you play outside for an hour, you'll get 1 more hour of "electronics time." It's really sad...I couldn't WAIT to get out of the house on the weekends especially and just ROAM, PLAY IN THE MOUNTAINS, etc.,
One of the delightful memories I have was in my early teens. Every July or August a small group of us boys in our rural village would get some older guy to buy some Cuban Crook rum-soaked cigars for us and we would go down to the woods around Norton Creek and find a wild grape vine and shake the grapes down. Then we would spend the afternoon lazing around, smoking cigars, and eating wild grapes. Those were the good times.
I wouldn't trade kick ball, hide N seek, slip N slide, burrowing tunnels in the snow, shucking corn on the porch with my grandma or reading a good book for social media as a kid. I think kids of today have been cheated.
Me too, because I remember in pre-school at nap time, I shoved pebble up my nostril, and I had to get the teacher to remove it. Lol.
I would have benefited so unimaginably much had the internet existed when I was younger. It’s an unprecedented tool for education and I’m stunned anyone would say they are glad it was not available.
Be stunned. We had encyclopedias, and public libraries, and we were fine with it. I'm willing to bet I got a better public school education during the 60s and 70s, than most kids got after 1985.
I think the biggest change? We used our imaginations to play.
I see few children who aren't just handed a parents cell phone for entertainment. It drives me nuts.
Yes I love today's ability to know people all over the world and share - but I also appreciate that we did a lot of "make our own fun" and that was a good thing.
@KKGator I had the same tools as well. I also was brought up in a state that is not known for it’s education. I did fine. I wouldn’t expect that to stun anyone. Though, saying that I’m glad that I had less tools might.
I fully agree with your comment. Our children and grandchildren have missed out on discovering the wonders of life in a natural environment in favour of images on a computer screen or smart phone. It has changed the way people communicate and think, to such a degree it has become the new reality for communication. How long before virtual reality totally replaces actual reality? Probably sooner than we think. The brave new world looks scarier every day. The things of science fiction are rapidly becoming science fact.
Yep, I'd rather not have had video evidence of all the stupid and sometimes illegal things I did back then.
