There are actually many different versions of philosophies which are identified as "socialism". When speaking of or criticizing socialism, you need to be specific about just what you are talking about, as the label covers a very wide variety of systems.

Personally, if I had to choose one to live under, I'd choose the Democratic Socialism that they have in many Northern European countries, which are both economically sound, and rated as the having the happiest people on earth. Despite the socialist label it is a capitalist system, only they reign in the most exploitative parts and put limits on the greatest abuses associated with capitalism and redirects resources to pay for free college educations and free health care, as well as other societal benefits. I wish we did that here in the U.S.

We do not have free health insurance. We have universal health insurance. Sure you guys can "choose" not to be insured but we all know that ain't much of a choice. So you end up paying 2-3 times what I pay for a shittier service whilst the insurance and medical provider companies rip you off. Just double-checked and no, the govt cannot access my medical records any more than they can access yours.
